The past week my family and I were here on this Dutch island of Texel, which is the largest of a group of islands in the north of the Netherlands. On the west side of the island sand dunes protect the island from the sea. On the east side there's only a small part with dunes and a dyke to protect that part of the island.
Arriving on the island the first thing I noticed were the flocks of sheep. The villages are very picturesque and well preserved. I often had the feeling that I was abroad, for it was so different from the mainland . There is a possibility to go on a seal watching tour. There's also a seal sanctuary.
A very common bird is the sea- gull, but all kind of geese are there too and the odd duck. We rented a house large enough for 8 persons. There were four bedrooms, two toilets, a bathroom, and a livingroom with a small open kitchen. A utility room contained a second fridge. The house was surrounded by dunes, and the other houses were all spread all over the place. Plenty of space for the three children to play. In the evening they went swimming in the indoor swimmingpool. We hired bicycles and did everything by bike. I didn't cycle here much. One of the villages I really love, is Oosterend ( Easter End). My sister used to live there from 1960 till 1967. My brother-in-law was the vicar of the Reformed Church of Oosterend. We spent many happy holidays with them.

Yeahhhhh..... TEXEL
Fijne avond
groetjes :-)
Charming old places there on Texel.
I can see why you are having a great time together.
Such lovely shots... great place to be.
What a lovely place to spend some time! Love your photos as always, Wil! Hope you have a wonderful week!
Sylvia
Wow, you certainly get around the world these days, Fishing Guy. I've been following you exploits and gorgeous pics of Austria, Italy, Mexico and now Holland.
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Sounds like a wonderful time at the beach house. And a fun time for the family to spend together.
Wonderful photos.
Texel, een van onze mooie eilanden. Wij waren er ook eens lang geleden. Het was er koud.
Fijne week.
Thank you for sharing this lovely island with us.
Hope you had a great time with your family.
Hi Reader Wil;) I've not been over to you for a while. What a lovely post on the island Texel. Living on the other side of the world, I never realised there are "islands" in your area. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from a South African living in the Sudan.
I won't like to live in the house at your header photo. There is no lawn. I like green like your other photos. That muscovy duck, my mum used to keep a lot of them, and I had to feed them. The drake was very fierce.
An intriguing slide-show; an entertainment in itself. Do you sell tickets?
What a great idea to all go somewhere so delightful, instead of piling on one family mamber's home.
I just love the level areas which would be such wonerful biking. I miss that a lot in the Ozarks.
Now, I have to go to Google Earth to find that delightful island.
What a lovely place - it looks perfect for a family vacation or for any vacation at all.
I enjoyed my visit to Texel, Take care this week and see you next for another slideshow to enjoy
Hi Dragonfly! I tried to find your blog but I have no access. I am sorry, but anyway thanks for your visit and kind comment.
It looks and sounds like a very peaceful place to visit.
That looks a lovely peaceful place. Reminds me a little of some of the Scottish islands.
I love that TUCKED-in space. Oh, BTW, I initial misread Texel as TEXAS!
On behalf of the ABC Wednesday team, thank you! - ROG
Love traveling with you Reader. You must have had a marvelous time and the Slide is such a great way to illustrate.
Another great slide show - looks like a perfect vacation spot. Loved the tree lined lane - so beautiful!
One of these days, I must pay a visit.
cool t-word...
I joined in this week.
See you later.
It looks like a charming place! Thanks for the tour!
A lovely tribute to a charming island. Your vacation sounds idyllic!
It sounds a wonderfully peaceful place! Love your banner, too. :)
Beautiful images of Texel. I enjoyed your slide show.
Wil, thanks for sharing your visit with the great photos.
I love your entry, it's quite a trip. Look like you had a nice ferry ride to texel.

You tell the story of your visit very well and I suppose you know that Dick is from Texel.
Interesting post wil - and nice to read you again after my return from Italy. I love your new header too - what a pleasant picture it paints of neighbours.
Thank you so much for showing Texel! You are right -very pictuesque! Some very old houses there too.
That was quite a big house (for Holland) you could rent!
I can understand that all of you enjoyed yourself - so would I have done. I reminded me a bit of the western coast of Denmark (Jylland), both the architecture and the nature. Not to mention the gulls :-)
Texel seems like a nice place to visit! Nice photos. You must have had a good time there.
Part of my T-post is devoted to a plant that is found in abundance in the Netherlands! I love them! Luckily I have had a few growing in my garden.
Best wishes,
Anna
