ABC Wednesday, R of Rescue, Resistance to Repression
With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.We started round 10 of the fascinating meme of ABC. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar . This week we are looking for words beginning with R.
One of the most remarkable stories I heard in Jerusalem, was the rescue of a great part of the Jewish population in Denmark during World War II.
On October 1st 1943 Nazi leader Adolf Hitler ordered Danish Jews to be arrested and deported. The Danish resistance movement with the assistance of many ordinary Danish citizens evacuated about 8,000 Danish Jews in fishing boats and other small craft to nearby neutral Sweden during ten nights. You can read this on the memorial stone.
The Danish King was very brave. When the Jewish Danes were forced to wear the yellow star of David, he also wore a yellow star and many others did so. This confused the Nazis.
Wikipedia says:
"The rescue allowed the vast majority of Denmark's Jewish population to avoid capture by the Nazis and is considered to be one of the largest actions of collective resistance to repression in the countries occupied by Nazi Germany. As a result of the rescue and Danish intercession on behalf of the 5% of Danish Jews who were deported to Theresienstadt transit camp in Bohemia, over 99% of Denmark's Jewish population survived the Holocaust."

Weekend Reflections, the Isle of Møn
By clicking on the photo you can enlarge it.
When we stayed on on Møn in Denmark ( see post of 12 October)we went for a walk in the surroundings of the camp site every evening after supper. The forest was beautiful and the trees were full of life. There were many birds, which we could hear, but not see. We heard the call of a grouse in the distance. Then we came to this water which was perfectly still and showed us the reflection of the trees surrounding it. This island is full of surprises! A little bit further we saw a deer standing in the middle of the path looking at us. We didn't move, not even to take a photo. It was so beautiful!
This photo was taken in Denmark in early May 2002, and the trees got new leaves. The weather was nice and warm then.
This meme was started on 27 September 2009, by James. You can join this meme at some time during the weekend. Just post your photo and go to James to tell him that you are on, or click on the logo in the sidebar. This meme is created for any type of reflection.

ABC Wednesday, N for Nyvang

When my sister, her husband and I stayed in Denmark in 2003, we visited Nyvang with our Danish friend. Here we had lunch with him in Nyvang park.

On the map you see the two crosses showing the location of Nyvang
This park is situated on the Isle of Sjaelland/ Zealand( this has nothing to do with New Zealand, which was named after the Dutch province of Zeeland). The Co-operative Village Nyvang in Denmark is a historical centre of experience located in aesthetic surroundings five kilometres from Holbæk.It covers the period from 1870 to 1950. Those were the years that the the co-operative movement had its heyday.
We first saw the mainbuilding, then after a lovely walk the dairy, the smithy and finally the farm, which you can see on the two last photos. My sister, brother-in-law and I were the guests of honour and got coffee in the livingroom. It was there that we met our friend's cousin, who performed the part of farmer's wife.
This year she and her husband, who is the manager of the park, came to see me here. We went to Gouda to see the church. Last year they came here as well and then we went to the windmills.

ABC Wednesday, M for Murals on Møn
My husband, children and myself stayed on the campsite of Møns Klint on the Isle of Møn in Denmark in 1981 for the first time. The children loved it and so did we. The weather was beautiful and we went swimming every day. The next year we went again, and after that we visited the island three other times. The weather was always great. On the beach we found all kind of fossils. On our walks we saw more wildlife than we ever did in my country. Once we had an encounter with a deer.
There is so much to see on this Danish island.
Møn is known for its natural beauty, good beaches, fresco-decorated churches, Stone Age and Bronze Age passage graves and monuments, and Møns Klint ("The White Cliffs of Møn"), the island's most popular attraction.
Møn has a number of interesting churches decorated with frescos. Fanefjord Church dates back to the 13th century, and has a set of famous frescoes painted in 1450 by the Elmelunde Master. Elmelunde Church is the oldest church on Møn, with parts dating from the start of the 12th century. Keldby Church has a unique altarpiece and is richly decorated with frescos.
About Liselund I found this:
Liselund lies in a fairytale setting near Møns Klint in the northeast corner of the island Møn.
This beautiful, romantic place - with a tiny thatched castle, a Chinese teahouse, a Norwegian log cabin, and situated among lakes, streams and memorial stones - was a wonderful gift of love from a husband to his wife.

Favourite places in the world: Denmark!
Denmark, Sjaelland 2002. One of the places where we had a great time. My sister, brother-in-law and our Danish friend, who died this year.
Of all my travels in the world there are a few that were particularly pleasant and at some of these places I felt really happy. I start with Denmark. Our Danish friend invited us to a historical village in Sjaelland not far from Holbaek, The weather was excellent for May. We saw all kind of old buildings like a smithy and an old farmhouse, where we had a cup of coffee with my friend's cousin. She was the one who told me early this year that my last Danish friend had died. After my Australian holiday, she and her husband came to see me.
