ABC Wednesday, W for Warning

When we were in Cairns  we were staying in a unit not far from the airport, which I always fly from when I go home. My daughter and one or two of her children stay with me until I have to say goodbye to them, which is the most difficult part of the holiday.

It is important to know that plants can be very dangerous, so we had to read these signs very carefully.

Travelling by car means watching carefully the traffic signs. Cattle owners leave their cattle walk freely in the bush. Consequently they cross the road where and whenever they want.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, W for Waka waka

Help spread Light and Power to the 1.2 billion people living in the dark

Two  years ago I had to fly back from Autralia to Amsterdam, but in Hong Kong I had to  wait a couple of hours for my flight to the Netherlands, at least I thought so, but it turned out  to be 36 hours due to a tornado over Hong Kong. This meant that I had to cancel my taxi from Amsterdam to my home. The problem was that the battery of my cellphone was almost depleted and I couldn't charge it.So when I read about the waka waka solar powered charger, I immediately bought a couple of these

devices. One for myself, the others as a present for relatives and friends. Another good thing is: the money spent on a waka waka is partly spent on a good cause in Asia or Africa.

Help spread Light and Power to the 1.2 billion people living in the dark

The waka waka can be best charged if you put it on a window sill in direct sunlight.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, W for Water

Water can be a blessing or a curse. Thanks to the water in Holland, we invented windmills to protect us from  floods. We use our rivers to convey goods by boat to Germany, Belgium and France, even farther across the oceans.

In winter we always hope that the rivers and narrow waterways are frozen over, so that skaters can go in for their sport.

Behind my house there are fields for cattle. In

winter the ditches are sometimes frozen over and fit for skating

Water  can also be a pest. We have all seen that too little of it causes a drought and the danger of bushfires.

Too much water on the otherhand, causes floods and dangerous landslides.

The photos of the flooded area were taken in Queensland Australia.

In the distance you see the suspension-bridge,  hanging over a small river

 where crocs live.

Driveway.Fortunately my daughter's house was dry.

We arrived at the letterW. Please refer to Mrs. Nesbitt and the ABC on Wednesday. You can also put the logo in your sidebar or post. If you have any problems please contact one of the team members. There are still people who don't mention ABC Wednesday , which is a pity because it is a nice meme, and  it is one of the two conditions you have to comply with. The other one is: you need a photo of an object the name of which begins with the letter of the week. It might also be the name of a person, an animal, or any other word beginning with the appropriate letter.

ABC Wednesday, W for Waterfalls, Wood Nymph

Vøringfossen (2004)

This summer I was in Norway, as I told you in my previous post.

For Dutch people Norway and other mountainous countries are very attractive . One of the main attractions is a waterfall. There were many of them in Norway.

One of the smaller falls we saw.

Kjosfossen,

There were  "Huldra" at Kjosfossen where  the train between Flåm and Myrdal halted.

Flåm

When ever we stop here we can hear the strange singing of the huldra. The huldra or woodnymph has a very beautiful face and  body, but at the back she has an ugly cow's tail.

Sometimes her back is hollow. She sings to seduce human males. She possesses cows which are either blue or grey. One could get hold of these cows if you threw a piece of steel over them. This way you could also get silver and table cloths.

The waterfall, which is called Kjosfossen, is in spring very impressive and always makes me think of the Holberg suite by Edward Grieg.

We thank Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC, and we must thank Roger too for the weekly job to find  ten bloggers for each of the ABC Team members  to visit and to read their posts. Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, W for Whale

The whale has swam the ocean since the dawn of time

If now the seas are red with blood then how is the crime

Save the whale that has a right to live and breed

Stop the men in the whaling boats who kill for greed

The hunter has no consciense as he raged the sea

The victim has no friend, only you and me

If we raise our voices we can right the wrong

Let the world join together now and sing our song

The earth in all its beauty is for all to share

For people and the animals everywhere

We say no to needless death by gun or knife

Every whale in the waters has a right to life

We say no to needless death by gun or knife

Every whale in the waters has a right to life

We must realize that if we destroy the whale

We will destroy part of ourselves

If we don't stop the slaughter now

Tomorrow will be too late

Tomorrow the largest living thing on earth

Will be lost forever and we shall all be guilty

The earth in all its beauty is for all to share

For people and the animals everywhere

We say no to needless death by gun or knife

Every whale in the waters has a right to life

We say no to needless death by gun or knife

Every whale in the waters has a right to life

When I was in New Zealand in 2005, I had the chance to see whales. The Maori guide on the boat  told us all about the three  whales we saw. They were  sperm-whales. It was quite an exciting experience to see such  enormous creatures.

Many years ago we were already members of World Wildlife Fund. We bought a record with Kamahl singing the song of "Save the Whale".

The Sperm-Whale is as big as a Boeing 737

The contents of his head is so big that it can contain an adult male elephant,

his heart is as big as a small car.

He is 18 meters long.

He feeds on giant octopuses

ABC Wednesday, W for Workcamps, Wiesbaden

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar. This week we are looking for words beginning with W. Please join us!

Participating in an international short term volunteer project ( so called Workcamp ) can be an exciting prospect. It is an interesting and meaningful way to travel with purpose and spend 2-3 weeks in a foreign environment. Working and living together with other volunteers from around the world provides an excellent opportunity to make many new friends, learn about unknown places and culture, gain new skills and experience. Your time, energy, and enthusiasm can make a difference in areas where help is really needed.

My best holidays were the ones I spent in international workcamps, ecumenical workcamps to be precise.

It started when I was a student in the summer of 1953. Students were asked to help cleaning houses in the areas covered with mud and debris due to the flood  in Zeeland of January that year. It was a great experience to work with so many  young people from abroad.

In 1955 I went to an ecumenical workcamp in Wiesbaden- Biebrich in Germany.

I stayed  there from 29 July till  28 August. We were with 35 campers from 14 countries. Most of the campers were German from East and West Germany.
Our work was mainly working on a road and digging foundations of houses for settlers from  East Germany. Some of us were to go to a nearby factory of building materials.

ABC Wednesday, W is for Wombat

She was so lazy, that she had no intention to move!
Another interesting Australian animal is the wombat, which you see here in the arms of her carer. She is a marsupial as are many Australian animals. Her pouch is backward facing, for wombats dig their burrows and if the pouch was facing upwards,  it  would be contaminated by dirt and sand during digging.
Thirty days after mating the wombat female gives birth to a bean-sized baby weighing one gram. The baby uses its front legs to drag itself into the pouch, where it stays between six and ten months.
An adult Common Wombat may   weigh between 22 and 40 kg. It is a nocturnal animal, spending two-thirds of its life underground, emerging to eat grass and other plants. The wombat we saw one night near our holiday house, was very slow and didn't even attempt to run away.

Please don't forget to refer to the ABC Wednesday meme either by mentioning Denise Nesbitt as the creator, or by showing the logo. It sometimes happens that a person  uses a subject which has nothing to do with the letter of the week, and he or she doesn't refer to the ABC logo or to Denise Nesbitt either.
