ABC Wednesday, F, for Fog, Fermain Bay

In May 2006 my sister, her husband and I were in Guernsey for a week. We walked a lot and went to see the blue bell forest.

After having walked in this forest,

where we admired the beautiful blue bells, we reached Fermain Bay.

We found a bench and my sister, brother-in-law and I decided to treat ourselves to a delicious ice-coffee with a lot of ice-cream and whipped cream on top of the coffee.

My brother -in-law went to fetch it, but no sooner sat we down,

when there was a fog coming up from the sea.

It came so fast, that we couldn't see him coming back with the coffee.

ABC Wednesday, F for Flatlife.

Living in an apartment in a block of flats which is so small that you can hardly move, makes one inventive. See for yourself! These drawings are again made by Heath Robinson.

ABC Wednesday, F for Flying

Travelling to Australia before the war, or even a long time after the war, meant travelling by ship. Now it is normal to fly to all distant countries and also to the not so far away places.

But a flight in a helicopter is still quite exciting. I have been in a helicopter when I was in New Zealand in 2005. Together with my two eldest grandchildren we flew over a glacier on the South Island.
These two photos were taken in Cairns.

This was the helicopter that took us
to the Franz Josef  Glacier in New Zealand in  January 2005.

It actually landed on the glacier and gave us plenty of time to play in the snow.

ABC Wednesday, F for Free- Range

Free Range Eggs for Sale

Free Range Chickens

ABC is created by Denise Nesbitt. It has been an enormous success. We arrived at the sixteenth round and the letter E. See more lovely and interesting words starting with F. Click on the logo in the sidebar and refer please to the ABC on Wednesday meme  and Mrs Nesbitt.

Wikipedia says:" Free-range eggs are eggs produced from birds that are permitted outdoors for at least part of the day. The term "free-range" may be used differently depending on the country and the relevant laws.

Eggs from indoor-only chickens might also be labelled Cage-free, Barn, Barn-roaming or Aviary. This is different from birds that are reared in systems labelled as Battery cages or Furnished cages."

You will understand that I 'll never buy eggs produced  from birds in battery cages. There are people who say that the "battery eggs" taste less good, as the chickens are confined in  small cages and are forced to produce eggs without a break.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, F for Fire and Fog.

Boiling water on the beach of Coloured Sands near Cooktown in Queensland,
Some years ago.

There has always  been fire, but when was it used  with a purpose?
From Wikipedia :

Discovery of Fire

The controlled use of fire was an invention of the Early Stone Age. The earliest evidence for controlled use of fire is at the Lower Paleolithic site of Gesher Benot Ya'aqov in Israel, where charred wood and seeds were recovered from a site dated 790,000 years ago.

In a paper published in Nature in March 2011, Roebroeks and Villa report their examinations of the available data for European sites and conclude that habitual use of fire wasn't part of the human (meaning early modern and Neanderthal both) suite of behaviors until ca. 300,000 to 400,000 years ago. They argue that the earlier sites are representative of opportunistic use of natural fires.

Natural  fires are caused by volcanic eruptions or by lightning. Lateron people discovered a way to make fire themselves. This was very important. They could change their diet from raw food into cooked food. They could now live in better conditions and build fireplaces and  hearths.

A hearth is a deliberately constructed fireplace. The earliest fireplaces were made by collecting stones to contain the fire, or simply reusing the same location again and again and allowing the ash to act as hearth construct.
Those are found in the Middle Paleolithic period (ca 200,000-40,000 years ago, in caves in South Africa and in Israel. Later fire was used to produce pottery and clay objects. This all happened already  in 40,000-20,000 BC.

It was great to have lunch near this fireplace in a cosy corner of this restaurant in Holten, Netherlands.

My baby granddaughter was fast asleep in front of the fireplace. She was very cold after the ride at the back of the bicycle.

It was foggy when we arrived, and cold!

ABC Wednesday, F for Feed the birds from Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins
A magic nanny comes to work for a cold banker's unhappy family. She changes the world for the two children whose father is a cold, businessman and whose mother has no time to look after them.

   Feed the birds....

Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's
The little old bird woman comes.
In her own special way to the people she calls,
"Come, buy my bags full of crumbs.
Come feed the little birds, show them you care
And you'll be glad if you do.
Their young ones are hungry,
Their nests are so bare;
All it takes is tuppence from you."
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.
"Feed the birds," that's what she cries,
While overhead, her birds fill the skies.
All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares.
Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares.
Though her words are simple and few,
Listen, listen, she's calling to you:
"Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag."

ABC Wednesday, F for Fairywren

To enlarge the photo please click on it!

When we were on one of the beaches I showed you a couple of weeks ago,
my daughter pointed at this bird.Look at this little fellow it is called Fairywren and it lives all over Australia. So it was no surprise to find this bird on one of the beaches of north Tasmania. In Wikipedia I found some more information. During the breeding season the male is beautifully coloured with blue feathers . After the breeding season the male and female birds and also the young ones take a brownish, greyish colour.

"They are small to medium birds, inhabiting a wide range of environments, from rainforest to desert, although most species inhabit grassland or scrub. The grasswrens are well camouflaged with black and brown patterns, but other species often have brilliantly coloured plumage, especially in the males.
They are insectivorous, typically foraging in underbrush. They build domed nests in areas of dense vegetation, and it is not unusual for the young to remain in the nest and assist in raising chicks from later clutches.
Fairywrens are notable for several peculiar behavioral characteristics. They are socially monogamous and sexually promiscuous, meaning that although they form pairs between one male and one female, each partner will mate with other individuals and even assist in raising the young from such pairings. Males of several species pluck petals of conspicuous colors and display them to females for reasons unknown."

ABC Wednesday, F for Franciscan Friary and Chapel.

One sabbath we walked to this friary, which was built in 1922. There is a warm water spring, a chapel and a fish pond. The building lays in wonderful hilly surroundings. On our way to the friary we saw some stunning views.

ABC Wednesday, F for Friends for Ever

The owner of the huskies got the fright of his life when he saw a huge polar bear coming to his dogs. He saw that the animal singled out one of the dogs to play with. The dog and the polar bear played for a while, and fortunately the owner of the husky could take all these photos! I got these pictures from one of my e-mail friends and I enjoyed this little story! Hope you also like it.
