Our World Tuesday., ABC Wednesday, L of Lonely Lady

A Lonely Lady

One afternoon I heard a strange and horrible story of my gardener. Last year he had to do a very bizarre job in a neighbouring village . An old lady had died some time before the neighbours noticed that there was something wrong. She was discovered  a few weeks after she had died. She had no relatives, kept herself to herself, and  had neglected her garden in such a way that the undertaker was not able to remove her body from the house. There was only a very narrow path leading to the frontdoor. The gardeners were asked to remove all the weeds, bushes and plants from the garden and clean it as well as possible. It was a hell of a job and the first time they had to do this.

They often clean gardens for people who want to buy a house of which the former owner had died, but never a job like this.

It is a sad and almost unbelievable story. How lonely this lady must have been, and how difficult to live next to a person who doesn't want to have any contact with neighbours. She was a real recluse and nobody could get near her.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday L for Leerdam

An annual event of our choir is our trip to a museum, a factory or a boattrip on one of our rivers or lakes. This year we chose Leerdam, the Glass City of the Netherlands.

Glass- works

Leerdam  population: 20,563 in 2014) is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland.

Leerdam received city rights in 1407. The small river Linge, bordered by beautiful water meadows, defines the atmosphere and tone of the landscape. Several centuries ago Leerdam formed a part of the Vijfheerenlanden domain, before it was raised to the level of County in 1498.
In 1551, Leerdam, together with Acquoy, became property of the House of Orange and part of the County of Holland.
The rich history of Leerdam can be found in well-kept historic buildings such as the Grote Kerk (Great Church), the Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden (Mrs. Aerden Almshouses, now a museum), the remaining and restored city walls on the Zuidwal and the Oude Raadhuis (Old City Hall).

The restored city walls.

ABC Wednesday, L for Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine and Loch Ness

Loch Katrine

Loch Katrine

Nine years ago I had a holiday in Scotland. We made a boattrip on Loch Katrine which was really beautiful and peaceful like in the fjords of Norway and yet....

Norway has no castles like Scotland, but typically Norwegian farmbuildings with grassroofs.

The other two lochs we saw were Loch Lomond and of course Loch Ness!! But Nessie kept quiet and didn't show himself. May be he was intimidated by the Dutch language.

What does the Loch Ness Monster look like?

It has a brown body with 4 flippers. Has a dragon like head. There is allot of evidence to prove that the Loch Ness Monster does really exist.
Alternative answer: There is absolutely no scientific evidence to prove that a 'monster' exists in Loch Ness. Many people believe that the 'monster' story was simply dreamed up to atract tourists, if this is true it has certainly worked. Those who believe in the 'monster' seem to think it is some sort of marine dinosaur yet seem unable to explain what a creature that has been believed extinct for tens of millions of years is doing in a Scottish loch which was buried under a kilometre or more of ice during the last Ice Age, only ten thousand years ago.

Sunset over Urquhart Bay, Loch Ness

Although Nessie was sighted as far back as the 6th century a.d. it is the modern day sightings that have captured the public imagination.
In the early part of the 1930's a new road was built around Loch Ness which in turn brought in a spate of new sightings from road users and sightseers. Up until this time stories of the monster circulated more within the local community but talk of other sightings were spreading outwith the village.
The first recorded sighting of Nessie on land was made by Mr Spicer and his wife, on July 22nd 1933, who were driving down the road between the Loch Ness side villages of Dores and Inverfarigaig. They caught sight of a large cumbersome animal crossing the road ahead, which was some 20 yards from the water. They first saw a long neck, forming a number of arches, a little thicker than a elephant's trunk and a huge lumbering body heading towards the Loch. It disappeared into the bushes out of sight. After this sighting reports flooded in and interest grew on an international scale. Speculators offered huge prizes for the animal, dead or alive. The preparation of a cage for Nessie Circus owner Bertram Mills promised a sum of £20,000 to any man who could bring the creature alive to his circus.

On the 5th of January, 1934, a motorcyclist almost collided with the monster as he was returning home from Inverness. It was around 1a.m. and was bright due to the moonlight. As Mr Grant approached Abriachan on the north-eastern shore of the Loch he saw a large shape loom on the right side of the road.As he approached the object he saw a small head attached to a long neck. The animal saw Grant and promptly crossed the road back down to the Loch. Mr Grant, by this time, had jumped off his motorbike and followed the path it took to the Loch only to see the rippling water where thecreature had entered. In April,1934 the most famous photograph was obtained by a London surgeon as he heading towards Inverness along the new road.

Nessie The Surgeon's picture. There is some dispute as to the authenticity of this photograph.

COOKTOWN LIBRARY
This library and meeting room is a joint project of Cook Shire Council and Queensland Government Rural living Infrastructure Program.
Officially opened 13th December 1995 by Steve Fredhauer .

In January 2014 I stayed with my family in the sweltering heat of Cooktown. It was great to be in the library of Cooktown for this was good to keep cool.

The front of the library is adorned with this piece of Aboriginal art.

My daughter behind the desk, works several days in the week in this library

These three flags are important for Australia. The Aboriginal flag in the middle

between the Torres Strait Islander  flag and the Australian flag. They are  three

official flags.

This painting shows what is important for all the customers

who borrow books and all visitors

The children can keep themselves busy reading books or playing with all kind of toys. The smallest children can lie on a couple of cushions if they are tired

I had my i-pad with me and got a code for wifi. There is a special room for computer workers.

Another room is for those who want watch TV.

While inside the air condition was producing a nice  cool atmosphere, outside it was so hot and humid that the lens of my camera was steamed up, as if there was a dense fog. Lateron my camera could take a clearer photo of the surroundings.

ABC Wednesday, L for Lapoinya, Tasmania

Lapoinya
Tasmania
Lapoinya is located in Tasmania
Lapoinya

Waratah-Wynyard Council

Lapoinya (pronounced La-porn-ya) is a small agricultural centre on the north-west coast of Tasmania west of Wynyard. The name is Tasmanian aboriginal word for "fern tree", a plant that abounds in those surviving untouched parts of the original temperate rainforest. At the 2006 census, Lapoinya had a population of 368. First developed commercially around 1900 it has been a centre for forestry, mixed agriculture (especially potato-growing and grazing (mostly dairy cattle)

After our stay at Arthur River on the north-west coast we went to Lapoinya, where we were to stay at Newry Cottage Park in a cottage that was so delightful, that I wouldn't mind staying there for ever. The only thing I would have changed was the heating. I would have had central heating installed, for it was rather cold.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, L for Lisse

From Wikipedia:
The history of Lisse is closely related and similar to the neighboring towns of Hillegom and Sassenheim. Based on a document from 1198 which makes official mention of the town's name, Lisse celebrated its 800-year anniversary in 1998, although there is an indication that there was already a settlement there in the 10th century.
In the Middle Ages, Lisse was a small settlement; there were only 50 houses in 1500. Because of prolonged warfare (particularly the wars of Charles the Bold and the Eighty Years' War), poverty was prevalent. Its population lived from agriculture, animal husbandry, and peat harvesting.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Lisse was, like Hillegom, home to many estates of rich merchants and nobility. The forests and gardens of the Keukenhof, and of these other estates were removed to make way for the cultivation of bulb flowers. The sandy soil in Lisse's surroundings were highly suitable for its growth provided the soil was fertilized. The nearby dunes were excavated and forests cut down progressively over time for more fields for the flower business. This brought employment and prosperity to this area.

Lisse is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland

When I first met my husband in March 1963 he took me to Lisse, where we visited Keukenhof. For me it was the first time to see this beautiful park. It was spring after a long and very cold winter. It was a delightful and wonderful display of a great variety of flowering bulbs like tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. This park is a very important attraction for tourists from all over the world. The photos I show, are from an unknown photographer and I got them from an e-mail friend.
