You'll find Isabella Falls on the Isabella Creek in Queensland about 1580km north-northwest of Brisbane . Isabella Falls is about 184m above sea level.
 

We estimate that Isabella Falls is between 7.9m and 11m high.

The nearest populated place is the village of Hope Vale which is 12km away with a population of around 750 indigenous people.

Australia - Aboriginal Dreamtime: " All peoples of our world have a concept of how the world was formed. The Aboriginals believe that, in the beginning, the earth was featureless, flat and grey.

 There were no mountain ranges, no rivers, no billabongs, no birds or animals - in fact not one living thing.

 Then long, long ago came the Dreamtime. The Dreamtime was a time when giant creatures rose up out of the grey plains where they had been slumbering for countless ages.

These mythical Beings looked like animals or plants or insects, but they behaved just like humans. They wandered across the vast grey wastes, digging for water and searching for food and as they searched, because of their giant size, they made huge ravines and rivers in the land. Thus the world took on the shape it has today."

In Cooktown there is a great example of Aboriginal art. It's called the Milbi Wall. This is created by the inhabitants of Cooktown and the Aboriginal compound of Hopevale, under the direction of the Hopevale artist Roy McIvor, who is an uncle of my daughter's ex- husband.Milbi is the Guugu Yimithirr (local Aboriginal language) word for story. The wall is meant to be part of the reconciliation project and a memorial to show history from an Aboriginal point of view.

The wall concists of three parts. The first part tells about the Dreamtime, the second part about the first contact with Europeans and later Asians, these contacts were disastrous for the Aborigines, then the third part shows us the present time which hopefully promises reconciliation of differences.The stories are told in beautiful ceramic tiles.The Wall is built right at the spot where, in 1770, Captain James Cook and his crew first set foot.

On top of the wall lies the Rainbow Serpent, one of the creator spirits of the indigenous people of Australia.

ABC Wednesday, A for Amazing Animals

After the cyclone Larry, which raged over Queensland in March 2006, many buildings had been destroyed and although there weren't many casualties, a lot of people and also pets became homeless. Fortunately  many of those animals were rescued by kind men and women. It was amazing that these animals were peacefully lying side by side in a car of one of the rescuers . There were three dogs already in the car when a cat joined them.Lateron another dog came and was received by the others as if they had known each other for a long time already. . And all in good harmony. They respected each other's company,that this was their only chance to survive. Here you see how devastating Larry's work had been.

ABC Wednesday, Y for Yidaki

  

Yidaki / Didgeridoo

Yidaki is a form of the instrument which is played in North East Arnhemland and the Yolngu own the oldest stories on how the instrument came to existence. Yidaki are mostly conical shaped instruments and vary in key mostly between C and G. A perfect Yidaki has a 'toot' about an octave higher than the fundamental and needs no beeswax .

 This is Elijah Gunydjurruwuy, he was at the age of 14 already an accomplished 

yidaki player and toured with the Yalakun Dancers from Lake Evella

to Singapore, Malaysia and France.

A yidaki  is another word for didgeridoo.

The didgeridoo was born in the Northern Territory of Australia.
For the lover of Aboriginal arts and culture it is quite fortunate that the indigenous people of Northeast Arnhem Land meticulously maintained a long unbroken tradition to the fascinating art of making the 'didgeridoo,' an instrument which the YOLNGU artists of Northeast Arnhem Land refer to as the 'YIDAKI'..

ABC Wednesday, W for Warning

When we were in Cairns  we were staying in a unit not far from the airport, which I always fly from when I go home. My daughter and one or two of her children stay with me until I have to say goodbye to them, which is the most difficult part of the holiday.

It is important to know that plants can be very dangerous, so we had to read these signs very carefully.

 

 Travelling by car means watching carefully the traffic signs. Cattle owners leave their cattle walk freely in the bush. Consequently they cross the road where and whenever they want.

Being in the Botanic Gardens of Cooktown we saw a lot of Palmtrees. Some of them are really very beautiful and colourful. Like the Foxtail Palm.

 This Foxtail Palm was only found in a very small part of Australia on the boulder strewn, exposed gravel hills of Cape Melville Range on Cape York Peninsula. That is not far from where my daughter lives. Now it is one of the most popular palms in the world and grown in many places outside Australia.

ABC Wednesday, O for Orchid

I told you something about the Botanic Garden in Cooktown, and perhaps you saw the lovely purple flowers on one of the photos. They are the Cooktown orchids, symbols of the area. I thought it appropriate to use this flower for the letter O this week.

ABC Wednesday, N for Nature's PowerHouse in Cooktown

Karien meets often friends and relatives for coffee in

the Nature's PowerHouse, which is situated in the Botanic Gardens of Cooktown.

Every time I visited Cooktown in Queensland, Australia, I learned something new. There is a terrace outside the Nature's  PowerHouse where you can have coffee or a meal and at the same time enjoy the vegetation of the Botanic Garden. My daughter often comes here  to work on her computer or just relax. She often meets friends and other people she knows. I always join her when I happen to be in Cooktown.
