Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, W for Weighing-house, Gouda

Posted by Picasa

De Weighing-house in Gouda was built at the Market of Gouda, according to a design of Pieter Post in 1668
The building was mainly used as a weighing place for cheese.

The Waag( Weighing-house) was to be higher than the surrounding buildings. They had to be at least six feet lower than the Waag.
The Waag serves now as the Cheese and Trades museum
.

Here you see how the cheese was weighed on this enormous balance.

The following photos show the inside of the building now. My friends and I bought and tasted a lot of cheese here.

Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, V of Vis-à-vis

Posted by Picasa

Vis-à-vis means literally 'face to face'. Often now used in the sense of 'in relation to'.
Origin
The term is French and began to be used in English in the mid 18th century. The French spelling is vis-à-vis, i.e. with the grave accent, although that is often omitted when written in English. It is now frequently printed, no doubt to French shrugs and mutterings, as 'vis-a-vis' or even 'viz-a-viz'.

All these photos were taken in Gouda.

What's behind that door and those windows?
Well behind these windows and door you will find the museumcafé. The museum was a hospital in the middle ages. When the weather is warm we take our coffee in the museum garden( see post of some weeks ago).

All day I have been thinking of the people who have to face Irene. On TV we see Irene's devastating power, destroying everything that's in its way. May God help them.

There are so many little bridges in Gouda and they all are revealing lovely corners of the ancient city of Gouda. So here's another corner, near the cathedral this time! The cathedral is called the St.Janskerk.
The Sint Janskerk in Gouda, the Netherlands, is a large Gothic church, known especially for its stained glass windows, for which it has been placed on the UNESCO list of Dutch monuments.
The church is dedicated to John the Baptist, the patron saint of Gouda, and was built during the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1552 a large part of the church burned, including the archives. Around 1350 a tower was built (only the lower part remains). In 1485 the foundation was built for the present-day choir. This expansion made the church the longest in the Netherlands, with a length of 123 meters.

Another bridge in Gouda.Gouda is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Gouda, which was granted city rights in 1272, is famous for its Gouda cheese, smoking pipes, and its 15th century city hall. But also for candles and beautiful pottery!

Louis from San Francisco started this meme, and many of us like to join in.

That's my World ,The City of Gouda

In the Middle Ages, a settlement was founded at the location of the current city by the Van der Goude family, who built a fortified castle alongside the banks of the Gouwe River, from which the family and the city took its name. The area, originally marshland, developed over the course of two centuries. By 1225, a canal was linked to the Gouwe and its estuary was transformed into a harbour. Gouda's array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular day trip destination

Another bridge in Gouda. You also see one of the cheese shops. Here my daughter and her partner bought all kind of delicious cheeses, which we ate as a snack with a glass of wine or beer!
