ABC Wednesday, Q for Quest
|
New Zealand |
This article discusses significance-laden journeys.
In mythology and literature, a quest, a journey towards a goal, serves as a plot device and (frequently) as a symbol. Quests appear in the folklore of every nation and also figure prominently in non-national cultures. In literature, the objects of quests require great exertion on the part of the hero,
and the overcoming of many obstacles, typically including much travel.
The aspect of travel also allows the storyteller to showcase exotic
locations and cultures (an objective of the narrator, not of the
character).
When I read the word "Quest" I thought of the quest of the Holy Grail and the knights of King Arthur. But there are many more!
I read for instance "The Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien and I saw some of the places in New Zealand where the movie was shot. Another series of books with a quest are the Harry Potter books.
It is remarkable that the medieval quests were done by heroic knights or kings, while the modern ones were vulnerable persons, very young for the greater part and not so brave, but still determined to save humanity and this planet. The Bible is full of those chosen people who have to commit missions, which are almost impossible, nevertheless they succeed always in spite of their weaknesses.
Question1: Can you name some of the heroes who were chosen by God for a mission?
Question2: Who was singing the following poem?"( King Arthur, Harry Potter, or Frodo the Hobbit)
"Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run.
West of the Moon, East of the Sun."

Harry Potter is one of my favourite quests!
Al met al een prachtige invulling van de letter van deze week....

Quest is such a great word.
I think Paul was on a quest to spread the Gospel to the world.
Great choice for Q and love the examples ~ all my favorites!
Happy Week to you,
artmusedog and carol
John The Baptist had a quest to baptise as many as he could, in the name of the Lord.
I'm afraid I don't appreciate J K Rowling's Harry Potter stories or even Tolkien's literature, I dislike Sci-Fi with a passion too.
Aren't I a bore?
Hope all is good with you Wil, all fine here apart from the cold and damp fog, which does not suit my Rheumatoid..
Best wishes,
Di,
ABCW team.
You always have QUALITY posts!

Well, the second quote is Tolkien, so it must be Frodo. So many on quests in the Bible, - in the New Testament all the disciples were left with the quest to go into the world and spread the Light of the Word.
I have not read either book, but I devour the movies of both.
My ABC WEDNESDAY
incredible...
a quest for q post, nice anyway.
if there were no quest by the adventures, there will be no discovery of New Zealand.
Wonderfully interesting.
Jonah comes to mind on his way to Nineveh. He completed his quest by going through a whale!!

Wonderful post and I always think of the on going journey of Don Quixote as an epic Quest.
I know the lyrics are sung by Frodo but I still think of the fairy tale of the princess and the polar bear (which I cannot recall the name)who lived East of the moon and west of the sun.
The Quest reminds me of Dan Brown's book Da Vinci Code. When i saw Harry Potter's picture thought you were going to talk about Quidditch!
Lewis and Clark were on a quest to learn about the Louisiana Purchase (the whole western part of the USA pretty much).
Missionaries were on a quest to convert and baptize Native Americans (but I do not necessarily agree that was a good thing).
I am in awe of how you come up with such educational and entertaining posts for every letter (especially "Q", which must be the hardest).
