ABC Wednesday, T for Tasmania

In December me and my family are going to Tasmania to celebrate X-mas. We chose Tasmania because Queensland will be far too hot for us at that time. You understand that we are looking forward to being together at Christmas, on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

The state of Tasmania is named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who made the first reported European sighting of the island on 24 November 1642. Tasman named the island "Anthony van Diemen's Land" after his sponsor Anthony van Diemen, the Governor of the Dutch East Indies. The name was later shortened to Van Diemen's Land by the British. It was officially renamed Tasmania in honour of its first European discoverer on 1 January 1856.

We thank Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC, and we must thank Roger too for the weekly job to find  ten bloggers for each of the ABC Team members  to visit and to read their posts. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar . This week we are looking for words beginning with T.

I hope you have a wonderful trip and a beautiful Christmas/New Year with family and friends, Wil! Somehow Tasmania, to me at least, has always sounded so intriguing "other worldly"!! Hope you get some great pics to share with us!!

It sounds like you'll have an awesome vacation. I have been to New Zealand but never (yet) to Tasmania. The problem for us is that it is so far and so long a trip - you need a lot of time just for traveling (which we often don't have).

Enjoy - I look forward to reading all about it.

I don't know much about Tasmania. My first thought was (and please forgive me) the Loony Toons Tasmanian Devil character! Hope you have a wonderful time with family during the holidays.

I never knew it had a different name first. Although the name does ring a bell somewhere.

Sounds like a wonderful trip you have planned. What an exotic sounding place and I have to admit my ignorance also for I too only associated the place with the
"Tasmanian devil".
Hope you take lots of pictures and let us tag a long with you via your posts. The beauty of blogging which shrinks the world for us.
Now to go google Tasmania.

I wonder if the Tasmanian devil character originated from there?

Catching up with all the T entries.
