Between 1066 and 1093 Olav Kyrre, king of Norway is said to have founded Bergen, the largest city in the country for the next 600 years. It became a vital link in the Hanseatic League( a chain of European and Baltic cities with shared trading agreements, one of them was the Dutch town of Deventer).
The famous composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was born here and lateron lived in his beautiful house "Troldhaugen"(the Hill of the Trolls). Edvard and his wife Nina are buried in a cliffhewn tomb in the grounds.
The old stave church at Fantoft, originally built in Fortun in 1150 and moved to Fantoftin in 1883, burnt down in 1992.Fantoft stave church has been rebuilt just as it was before.

Bergen certainly is a beautiful place! What a shame the Stave church burned down. It's wonderful that it was replaced but it's still not quite the same.
What a lovely slide tour of Bergen for B. It is a lovely place, and so relaxing with the morning cup of coffee.
Hey! Check out the main ABC Blog - there is something there for you!

Bergen is one of my most favourite places Wil - so beautiful. How could anyone fail to be inspired by that lovely little room where Greig wrote his music.
I am coming to The Netherlands in September for a few days - it will be my first visit and I am so looking forward to it.
The slide show was lovely and the music perfect for it! A very special place for sure.

Thank you so much for a lovely presentation of my home town! :-)
I see that I ought to stay there and never leave ;-)
PS I wasn't able to participate this time, but "I'll be back".
What a beautiful place. I was impressed with the lovely buildings, the narrow streets and no traffic. Would be lovely to walk or bike ride.
That harbor is beautiful.
Think I will google the UNESCO's World Heritage List now.
Thanks again Wil for a lovely trip.
Thanks for the beautiful pictures and the information about Bergen. I didn't realize how beautiful it really is.
Hello Wil. I just popped over again to answer your question on whether or not we could meet in The Netherlands.
Our friends live in Hillegom and we shall be staying there and perhaps coming to Amsterday (I hope) to look at the galleries etc. So I think it is probable that we shall not have the opportunity to meet. Sorry to say.
Perfect B choice! Thanks for the Grieg serenade as I read. You're making want to travel sooner than later.
Nice pick for B for ABC.
On behalf of the ABC Wed. team, thanks for participating.
Beautiful place, interesting bit of history too. I was not aware of this city.
Beautiful header, Wil! And I love Grieg's music:)
When you visited Bergen, Wil, did you meet with RuneE?
Beautiful church and slide show.
It is such a beautiful and well preserved place. I love you new photo of your website.
fun place to visit...
lovely b post!
One of «Louis'» cousins in visiting Bergen now. She's quite the world traveller. She went to Norway from Sweden where she sent «Louis» this image.
Thanks for the photos, Wil.
We visited, too briefly, Bergen way back in 1977. It was a rare sunny day in the summer. I was bundled in a wool sweater, but the Bergen men in the square had their shirts off, turning toward the sun.
Congratulations on your award from ABC!
