A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, ash and gases to escape from below the surface. The word volcano is derived from the name of Vulcano island off Sicily which in turn, was named after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.
Also in Australia there were volcanic eruptions long ago.Many of these eruptions created lakes, which we saw in the Tablelands in Queensland. One of the lakes is Lake Barrine. We walked around it. It is a five kilometers'walk. The Lake was created 10,000 years ago. The eruption must have been enormous. The video you see, shows the eruption of one of the volcanoes on Hawaii

Fascinating post for the day! We're surrounded by what are assumed as inactive volcanoes -- just hope the assumptions are correct! They were wrong about Mt. St. Helens! The video is terrific! Hope your week is off to a great start, Wil! Enjoy!

Fascinating, beautiful but deadly and it creates the most beautiful places. Did you see the Icelandic volcano? We are waiting now for its sister that always erupts later. What some power they have.
WOW! One of the best posts I've seen so far today! What a beautiful place to visit and how fascinating that all that beauty came from such destruction! And the video of the eruption in Hawaii is great! I saw flames erupting from Mt. Etna when I was nearby, but really nothing like this! Thanks for sharing. :D
I agree with Anthonynorth, volcano eruption can wipe out a civilization but the aftermath is a natures beauty. Awesome!

Excellent information on volcanoes! Mt St Helens erupted in the PNW about two decades ago and there is still ash under my junipers. Your blog header is so very beautiful!
This year has seen an unusually large amount of volcanic activity that has made the news.

Wow, the footage of the volcano is stunning, isn't it? I wonder what causes the lightning ... maybe just the stresses and heat from the eruption disturbing the geomagnetic force? I don't know, just wild guessing.

I've never actually seen an eruption up close. I've seen the magma in the crater and it's an awesome frightening sight. I do love Australia. Your wonderful header photo could have been taken in Hawaii. Very similar plants.
Apart from the air travel and freight, were you affected by the Iceland volcano?

What an excellent choice of V-word - Volcano! I think about the volcano on Iceland that left so much ash hanging
in the air that it caused havoc with the airlines in Northern Europe, some months ago.
