ABC Wednesday, F for Flat Life

Posted by Picasa

Click to enlarge please to read the captions! Cartoons made by Heath Robinson.

When we started our married life, we first lived in a very small house with three small bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor, and on the groundfloor a livingroom, a kitchen and a toilet. We were very happy, although the flat roof started to leak on a winter night and the frontdoor was rotting. Two children were born there. When I was expecting the third one, we decided to move house. We chose this house, where I still live. I still like it. There are four bedrooms and I can have plenty of
guests. All rooms are larger and the top floor contains a very large bedroom and a lumber room, where the central heater is. Looking at the cartoons, which are really funny, I do believe that people become very inventive, when they have to live in a very limited space. Though we never lived in such conditions, we also tried to find a place for our furniture, which was never too big.

The very first cartoon the favorite And interesting to watch. But yes, though the world is vast And amazingly we find less space. God must be thinking.

Oh how I love lumber rooms wil - or box rooms as we call them here. Ours gets full to bursting and them we clean it out and start again - usually about the time when we are due to go on holiday and the suitcases are hidden by this and that! Love the Heath Robinson cartoons too.

Very interesting! I prefer to live in a house than an apartment, although the yard surrounding the house requires high maintenance. Who takes care of your yard? Do you hire a gardener or do the work yourself?

Grappige plaatjes :-)

Flat life. Almost a play on words. At first I thought it was about 'flat life' in the sense of 2D and the images being on a flat surface. Then I realized it had to do with 'flat' as in apartment.
Loved those cartoons and a great post!

Heath Robinson's name has gone down in history. Whenever anything looks 'tied together with string' we'd say 'That looks a Heath Robinson affair!' Loved the cartoons and the flat-roof story,

Very funny cartoons. Fortunately I do not have to hoist my bed up to the ceiling each night. For starters the ceiling would be too low!

Fine cartoonist with whom I was not particularly familiar.

On behalf of the ABC Wednesday team, thank you!

My favorite is the last one - the chickens are fed up in the loft? Great cartoonist - I remember being very creative with space when I had to be!

Great cartoons, - I am going to send the wedding one to my granddaughter who is in the midst of planning a 'grand affair'. I wonder if I could fit a loom somewhere up next to the cathedral ceiling? Oh, I guess I am too old for the gymnastics involved.

Love these cartoons. Very creative. Your first home sounds a bit like ours was but we stayed there for 41 years. We were going to down-size since it was finally just the 2 of us. Funny thing is we got a much bigger home and are so happy we did. Company can come and Hubby and I don't get in eachothers hair now.

Hi Wil,

What a fun post. Love the cartoons. I have never lived in a flat, or apartment, and my house is much too large for one person, so I close off some of the rooms and use them only when family or friends are here.

Have a great rest of the week.

Hugs,

Renie

I have always heard that people with really large homes generally hang out in the smaller cozier rooms. Our home is average size, I think, but when we have guests and parties, instead of spreading out, they all want to cram into the kitchen where I am busy and would prefer a little more space. Ha.

Very unusual cartoons. The wedding party looks like everyone will have to set perfectly still for the board to come down over them so they can eat. LOL And the guest bedroom, well let's just say I hope the guest doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, that would be quite a big step. LOL But some one with a pretty quick mind came up with some ideas. LOL

Patty and I began in a former blacksmith shop. And it wasn't modern. Outside water, and toilet. When we left it was modern and nice. Now it is even better.

Your cartoons are nice and some are really funny.

Al die tekst lezen gaat nog niet al te best, maar kom je toch al een fijne vrijdag wensen

Ask just about anyone what their first apartment or house was and most will say "small" and "we made do." They will invariably add that they spent some of their happiest times there. Sometimes ingenuity gives us as much pleasure as abundance.

Those Heath Robinson cartoons are great! He had a wonderful imagination, didn't he?

We used to live in a flat on the eighth floor of a block when I was a child. We were lucky enough to have a balcony, though (of course) the door was kept locked most of the time, while we were very young. Never had to do the rope and pulley thing though. LOL!

That was great! Loved the cartoons. . . Nice comparison to your old house and your new one.

I missed you posting a bench this Friday because I so wanted you to see my special bench I posted this week on Friday. Maybe you will get a chance to stop by and see it later. . . you won't be sorry. It is so beautiful and special.

Nice to hear your history.

These space saving ideas could be good for my little 1-room (+ kitchen) house. LOL

This is very funny and inventive. I remember our first apartment, too. We had a smaller space to live in but were happy.

J’aime beaucoup les cartoons de Heath Robinson – ils sont très drôles. When I moved to San Francisco I had a small studio, small kitchen, bathroom and 1 room which was the living/bedroom. One of the walls was a bed, you would push on the wall and the bed would come down – there was a big spring. Then in the morning you pushed the bed back – and it was a wall.
