He might have been successful...
A couple of years ago the always so peaceful and quiet village, where I live, was startled by the news that a real crime had occurred here. Everybody talked about it. It was in all the local newspapers, even on TV.
Before I begin telling you the story, I first have to explain how the situation is in our small shopping centre. In one of the shops we have a small sub post office in one of the corners. There is always a lady helping at the desk. She knows everybody in our village, but on the afternoon of a certain day in summer a man, whom she didn't know, stood waiting in the queue. She didn't pay too much attention to him, because she was rather busy, but the shopkeeper noticed that the newcomer was a bit nervous and had shifty eyes. He also held his right hand in the pocket of his jacket. The man waited until the last customer had left, then he went to the desk and asked in a rough voice :"Money...money ... quick..."He took his hand out of his pocket and waved with something which looked like a gun." Money... money... come on... hurry up..." The lady behind the desk responded coolly:"Sorry sir, I am afraid we haven't got any money ". Now the man got really nervous and desperately he cried : "Money in safe!" She answered:"No, I haven't got the key!" At this point John, the shopkeeper jumped over the counter and tried to catch the man by his coat. The so-called bankrobber startled and escaped through the backdoor, dropping his gun. The shopkeeper of the shop opposite the post office heard the noise and ran out of his shop. John signalled to him that he had to ring the police, that's 1-1-2 for emergencies, while he continued pursuing the culprit. The police were very soon at the crime scene and were looking everywhere, there was even a helicopter trying to find him, but all in vain. They never found him! And since that time there haven't been any other "armed" robberies. The silly-billy had probably learnt his lesson. He might have been successful with a real gun, instead of the toy gun he left behind.!!

I love the Heath Robinson cartoons! There was a similar famous cartoonist in the USA -- Rube Goldberg drew very complicated ( and silly) machines too.

I think the world is getting crazier by the second! A toy gun?! LOL.

That really sounds a lot like a store robbery in the small village where we lived -- Patty and I. I was on my way to work and stopped in at the store to buy a pack of cigarettes and the girl behind the counter was white as a sheet and crying. She told me that she had just been robbed. And said the man ran out the door and pointed in the direction he went. I went home and got my gun and drove to the cornfield where the man had gone into. I stood up on the roof of an old shed and watched for the corn moving which would indicate he was running. In no time at all the place was crawling with local citizens with guns all ready to shoot the person who robbed the store. The county Sheriff arrived and circled around the country hoping to spot the man coming out of the corn field.

In the end, I was late for work and a lot of other people were too. The man was caught eventually, and he was in the Navy. Home on leave. Ran out of money and robbed the store. That's how his relatives learned it was him. He suddenly had money. I don't remember what happened to him.

I expect it was a real talking point for quite a long time afterwards, reader wil. Good that the lady behind the counter kept her cool throughout.
I love those Heath Robinson drawings - he was such a clever man

We had some locals break into an apartment recently. They took the loot back to their place forgetting they had left a trail in the snow. Their photos were in the newspaper the next day

Wonderful cartoons. The presence of mind and courage of the people saved the bank from getting robbed. very nice.

The cartoons are funny, but the story about the attempted robbery was both comical and frightening.

Al met al een goede afloop. Maar men mag er niet aan denken dat een of andere junkie een echt pistool in de hand krijgt.

Love stories about bungled robberies. Reaffirms that crooks just aren't smart. At least with a toy gun, the sentence in the States would have been less severe.

Like your other commenters have said...I love the drawings. Not knowing it was a toy gun until later, I am sure it was scary. Glad no one was injured over it all. Have a great day Wil!

Delightful cartoons! They reminded me a bit of the Danish humorist Storm P (of whom I guess you have heard). He was a master in inventing this kind of "machinery".

Oh, the strokes some villains pull to get away with a crime. And so often totally incompetent.
Loved the cartoons.

Extraordinary and a great story. I hope he mended his ways.

I understand the shock - but this is, sadly, commonplace, successful and in many cases, deadly elsewhere...as we all know.

And totally believable story; I think it probably happens more often than we know.

As newly part of ABC Wednesday Team for this go-round, thanks.

Funny cartoons! Thank goodness that was one robbery that ended up with nobody getting hurt!

Rose said...

Clever cartoons! An amusing anecdote, especially since no one was hurt in this incident. It reminds me of a segment on our local radio program about "stupid criminals":)

Cute cartoons, and a funny story about the absurd robbery attempt.

What a great story! I'm glad they guessed that he was bluffing and chased him off - pity he wasn't caught.

Our little Post Office was robbed once, too, but they did get cash. Not from the Post Office itself, but there is also a little general store there, and they stole the cash from that till. I think they caught our guy though.

I forgot to mention your header photo is just magnificent! It's amazing to think you can just skate on the river like that.

What a story! This morning an acquaintance was telling me that his car was stolen last week. They found the car on a highway on the other side of Atlanta, and the robber had dropped the business card of the shop where he works! Not too bright. Also looking at one of your earlier post on Charles Aznavour reminded me that when I was young (18) I met Charles Aznavour. I did not know then that he would become so popular – he was quite skinny and shy. His songs make me so nostalgic for days long gone. C’est la vie…
