YESTERDAY went so fast. When I was YOUNG I often listened to this song sung by Charles Aznavour. Now I feel some sadness when I hear this and I know this is so true...but still the memories linger in my mind...
of YOUTH and YEARS and YESTERDAY!!
Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet like rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way an evening breeze would tease a candle flame,
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built to last on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years have run away
Yesterday when I was young
There were so many songs that waited to be sung,
So many wild pleasures that lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see,
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out and
I never stopped to think what life was all about,
And every conversation that I can recall
Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all.
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do,
And I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond,
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit so quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed, somehow, to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play.
Yesterday when I was young
There were so many songs that waited to be sung,
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see,
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
Cause I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
And the time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young.

Beautiful post with wonderful narration.
Youth is wasted on the young, someone said, for they don't have the wisdom to appreciate it.
Love your engagement picture -- it's always bitter-sweet, to me, looking back.
This week I turn 64. How quickly the years went by! I love your engagement picture. You both look so happy!
A VERY fitting Y - a pleasure to read and a melody to love.
PS But, personally, I prefer him singing it in French - "Hier Encore!
Roy Clark, Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey also did that song. Never heard the Aznavour version before.
I love that song...beautiful and sad...
Your entry has the same theme as mine, but is much more poetic!
I didn't know this one by Charles Aznavour, but it's a beautiful song. 'When I was young', I want to tell me that I still am, but I am getting on, despite still being on the right side of 40!
I've always loved this song, even when I was young and I love your happy engagement photo. I'm glad you had happy years to enjoy with your husband. I know it's never enough. I like the sweetness and warmth of his face.
OMG made me teary eyed and my hair raise when I heard the song...my late father used to sing this song when we gathered around in the living room. Those where the days a happy years with him. Thanks for sharing.
YOU
Oh Wil, you haven't aged a day! :D
A beautiful post.
Ah, yearning for that youth. I've often thought about what I would change, then realise if I had I wouldn't be here.
How very true, Reader Wil! Such a bittersweet poem, but those foolish days of our youth give away to the wisdom we have today, I guess. I still feel like a teenager at times, but the mirror says otherwise:)
Oh, I recognize that! Yesterday, yesterday. Thank you for sharing your engagement photo! How lovely!
Oh, my, Wil, you did put me into a nostalgic mood with the song. Love your engagement picture. What a cute couple you two were.
Years fly by much to swiftly, with only sweet memories that linger, to remind us.
Hugs,
Renie
What a wonderful photo of the two of you on your engagement day.
I started younger than you did. By 1963, we had four children, and I had also gone through 3 abdominal surgeries. But our first three came every year, 1956, 1957 and 1958. Had surgery at 16, something called a dermoid cyst on my left ovary, which had to be removed, this was in 1953, doctors didn't know if I would be able to get pregnant or not. Well apparently I had no problem. LOL Another surgery in 1958 (gall bladder)3rd. baby was 3 months old and in 1960, they thought they missed some gravel, but it was adhesions that had shut off my gall ducts, so they explored and drained the ducts and removed the adhesions.
Myself knowing what I know now, I would have preferred to have waited a little while longer before starting the family and all.
A lot of fond memories to being young. But the song can be rather sad.
I had forgotten all about that song and Charles Aznover. I really liked him and the song.
It does make me feel a little sad and nostalgic. Its a perfect post for the letter Y.
It does go fast doesn't it? I can tell you have enjoyed your years and spent them wisely. You have children and grandchildren that adore you. I think that is such a beautiful thing. LOVE this song. Blessings!
Rarely a Y had such a strong meaning. Impressed.
Please have a nice Wednesday.
Our hearts share this exquisite bitter-sweetness because we are friends, Wil
Very poignant, - a beautiful choice for Y, and for the memories of Yesterday. Thank you for a lovely posting. I enjoyed it very much.
Wonderful post! "I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger".
I also like your header photo.

That is a beautiful song and I remember it well. Sorry that your dear husband left early, but you had a wonderful marriage and great children. We can not forever young.
Poignant post - but what a lovely engagement photograph of that attractive young couple!
Nice picture ...
Oh how true! And that song brought back memories for me too. He had such an interesting voice, didn't he?
Funnily enough, I posted a picture on my blog of OH in the year after we got married, with our first car and my little motorbike!
Great shot of the engagement.
I wish you a great year ahead!
Oh what a precious picture, Wil!
Always a price to pay.
I have enjoyed catching up with you this morning.
I have been running a tad behind in this New Year!
Such a sad song! Yesterday and youth and now I am older and wiser and retired!
Happy ABC looking forward to Z
Sherry
