that's My World, ABC Wednesday K for Kröller-Müller Museum

Posted by Picasa

In September I wrote someting about Hoenderloo and the national park of the Hoge Veluwe in Gelderland( see map). In this park there are several buildings. One of them is the gallery of Kröller-Müller, or as we call it the Kröller-Müller museum. It's a modern building and houses many paintings of Vincent van Gogh and other Dutch painters, but also those of other European painters of the 19th and 20th century. For the children there was a quiz which had them look for details of certain paintings. Outside there are statues, some of them modern others traditional.
The museum is named after Helene Kröller-Müller, an avid art collector who was one of the first to recognize Van Gogh's genius and collected his works. In 1935, she donated her whole collection to the state of the Netherlands. In 1938 the museum, designed by Henry van de Velde opened. The sculpture garden was added in 1961 and the new exhibition wing, designed by Wim Quist, opened in 1977.

Weekend Reflections, in Schoonhoven

The weather was fine on last Wednesday so a friend of mine and I decided to go to Schoonhoven and walk about. It's a nice typically Dutch town.
Schoonhoven is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland.
A historic map of Schoonhoven of 1652 shows the north and west town walls, which were common during medieval times in the Netherlands. The only remaining medieval entrance gate of Schoonhoven is the Veerpoort (Ferry Gate) next to the Lek River . This Veerpoort has protected Schoonhoven from the floods of the river Rhine and from the sea during the North Sea flood of 1953 and is still fully functional as a water barrier today.

Schoonhoven is renowned for its silver, hence it is nicknamed Zilverstad ("Silver City"). Since the 17th century silver smiths have already been present here. Today there are a lot of silver trade possibilities and Schoonhoven is home of the International Silver School.

Another less known tradition in Schoonhoven is that of clock making. There are still small scale clock makers. Some of them can be visited. A beautiful example of large clockwork is the Van den Gheyn Beiaard on the medieval town hall of Schoonhoven (external link 3). In the Dutch Gold, Silver and Clock Museum a lot of other large and small clocks are on display as well.

that's My World, ABC Wednesday,J for St.JANSKERK

Posted by Picasa

Sint Janskerk. The Sint Janskerk in Gouda, the Netherlands, is a large Gothic church, known especially for its stained glass windows, for which it has been placed on the UNESCO list of Dutch monuments.

For a virtual tour of the church click Here

The church is dedicated to John the Baptist, the patron saint of Gouda, and was built during the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1552 a large part of the church burned, including the archives. Most information of the early period is taken from the diaries of Ignatius Walvis. Around 1350 a tower was built (only the lower part remains). In 1485 the foundation was built for the present-day choir. This expansion made the church the longest in the Netherlands, with a length of 123 meters.
The stained glass windows were made and installed primarily by the brothers Dirk and Wouter Crabeth I, in the years 1555-1571, and after a short stop for the Protestant Reformation, until 1603. During the Reformation the church was spared, because the city fathers sided with the reigning king Philip II of Spain, rather than William the Silent, representing the Orange rebels. Later, after the orangists conquered the northern half of Holland, Gouda reverted to Orange in 1572. It was only during this period that the church was in danger, and three weeks later an angry mob stormed the church and plundered the contents, but fortunately left the windows intact. The church was closed, but many wealthy regents of the city attempted to have it reopened. In 1573 the Gouda council prohibited the practise of Roman Catholic religion and in the summer of that year it was opened for the Protestant Dutch Reformed faith. You know that nowadays Protestants and Roman Catholics live in peace with each other and even attend each other's services from time to time.

Ecolution is a sailing yacht, which will sail year round and world wide, summer and winter, throughout the world, operated by her two owners. A professional crew is not needed. Living on Ecolution for extended periods is intended so she will be built to feel warm and comfortable, like a home.

that's My World, ABC Wednesday, I for Inventor

Posted by Picasa

I saw something on TV that might interest you. Wubbo Ockels, an inventor and Dutch astronaut, has recenly designed a sailing boat. You can find all details
here. And click on the English flag in the right topcorner to see a video of the Ecolution as it is designed.

The sailing boat Ecolution of the ex- astronaut Wubbo Ockels generates its own energy and was built of durable materials.
The secret of this 25 metres long two-master lies under water. There are two enormous screws made of carbon which generate energy during sailing. This electric power is stored in two batteries, which can also serve as necessary ballast.
Five sailing days provide enough power to live a life of luxury during a month.
On board there are four toilets, underfloor heating, kitchen utensils like a microwave, dish washer and a cooker, there's even a shower with a steam cabin. The ship enters the harbour with electro motors. In case of an emergenty the crew can return to biodiesel. Therefore the ship has two separated engine rooms.

Ockels is going to test his invention.Wubbo Ockels, the first Dutchman who travelled in space, became after his return on earth a fervent supporter of using durable energy. "We have to be careful of our planet; we have only this one ."

These boxes are supposed to be art. There are many art objects spread all over the park. Anyway they show reflections of a tree and of myself. I can recommend to see the tree.

that's My World ,ABC Wednesday H for Hoenderloo, and Hoge Veluwe

This year I stayed twice at a holiday park in Hoenderloo,a village in the middle of the Netherlands and surrounded by low hilly woodland not far from the National Park De Hoge Veluwe, which means High Veluwe. Our bungalow was a pet free one, others can have pets. We had three bedrooms, a kitchen, sitting area, bathroom and toilet. The second time I stayed here with my daughter and the Australian family in a bigger house with four bedrooms.

We cycled from our holiday park to the Hoge Veluwe. My daughter, her Australian partner and three children enjoyed the ride as I did. The Hoge Veluwe is approximately 55 square kilometers in area, consisting of heathlands, sand dunes, and woodlands. It is situated in the Veluwe, the area of the largest terminal moraine in the Netherlands. Most of the landscape of the park and the Veluwe was created during the last Ice Age. The alternating sand dune areas and heathlands may have been caused by human utilization of the surrounding lands. The park forms one of the largest continuous nature reserves in the Netherlands. It houses deer, wild boar and smaller wildlife. There is a restaurant, a museum with paintings and sculptures, and a museum showing the secrets of subterrenean life.
