As long as I remember I had books, with the exception of the time when I was in a concentration camp in Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony at that time. We lost everything including our beautiful books. But as soon as we came home in the Netherlands I got again a lot of books. Both my parents bought books for us at any occasion, on a birthday, at St Nicolas' Eve, for Christmas, for anyhing... you name it. And lateron when I married, my husband did the same. My children and theirs are also readers. So I was always happy when I got a book for a present. Here you see some of the bookcases I have in my house.

What a marvelous post for both days, Wil! I love your photos of all the wonderful books that you have! I have a lot, but not quite that many. I'm working on it though as I do love to read!

Enjoy!

That must have been real torture, not to have a book to read.
So glad you have book friends all around your house now and plenty of room to stack them.

That is a great statue. What is that in the monk's left hand?

I can never bear to throw a book away - it looks as though you are the same, judging by the number of book cases in your house, reader wil.

I didn't think anyone could have more books than I have, but you may have me beat. I love reading and have for as long as I can remember. I enjoy reading new books as well as re-reading books I've read before. Thanks for a great dual post.

Fortunately you have a big house with enough room for your books! But I joint your passion, I do love to read myself very very much! And my husband too!
Have a nice week ahead!

Thanks Wil, now I see the new addition to your sidebar. What a wonderful family photo!
Your late husband looks like such a good, kind, strong, and smiling man. How hard to lose a friend like that too early in life. May his memory be a blessing.

I too love books. I have a hard time letting go so I have lots of bookcases. We are starting to use the library more and recycle books to the used book store. If we didn't there would be no room in the house for us.

Sistertex said...

wow that is a lot of books...not sure it beats the amount of books in my house, or my daughter's house who probably has twice the amount as I do. Books are wonderful...even though I have so many there are just times when I can't resist more.

Love the reading Monk too - nice entry this week (interesting as always!).

Wat heerlijk toch dat er boeken zijn. Mijn huis puilt ook uit en alle vier onze zonen zij n net als wij ook gek op lezen dus daar staan ook volle boekenkasten. Leuke foto's van al je boeken.

Dirkjogt said...

We are rich in books and have about run out of places to put them or walls to build another bookshelf. At the moment, my 'to be read' books are stacked at the side of each step up to my workroom. I badly need to sort through and give away some books but it's difficult to part with any.

Nice posts. You are so very neat! Praise the Lord!

Reading can take you to so many places and place you in so many lives. Great post.

Ah, look at all your beautiful books, Wil! I love books as well, and have quite a collection, some in English, some in German, some in Hungarian. I love to read, just as you do.

Great post!

Hugs,

Renie

I'm a book lover too. I always bought books for my kids for gifts. My friends used to use us a children's library. LOL

Now I go to the library more so they are no longe accumulating but still we have lots and lots.

before this computer era, one my fave hobbies is reading books. in fact, i have read hundred of books in law school. nothing beats the feeling of calmness and serenity when one is reading a good book. thanks for sharing your world.

I am jealous of the order in your wonderful reading rooms. My house is chaotic by comparison.

Etje said...

Lezen, ook één van mijn hobby's. Geef me een boek en je hoort me niet meer een ganse dag.
Zou niet weten wat te doen als ik zonder boek zou komen te zitten

Do share your love of books. Yesterday I got a video of my 2+ year old great niece. At one point she was "reading" a book. Her mother asked her if she wanted lunch and she said,"No, I am reading." Just love it.

wow so many books!
And I liked a lot your pictures, très elegant!
Your place is really beautiful!
Thanks for sharing!
Have a great week dear friend,

Like you Wil, we too have walls full of books, so have our children and grandchildren.
We lost well over 5,000 books in the fire in 1983 but have amassed a very large number again since that time.
We also have books by the Prof, his father, his uncle and three of our daughter's.

Can I come and hang out at your house? I'll bring some biscuits. :D I love books, too, and have a small library of my own; although, not quite as inviting as yours is!

Warm greetings from Florida!

Books are our best friends. Your bookshelves look lovely. What a great post for R, Reader Wil.

Moi aussi j'aime les livres et je trouve que c'est le plus beau des cadeaux, mais mes bibliothèques sont moins bien rangées que les vôtres !

With books you are never lonely, and if you can't travel, you can by books to some exciting places.

I love to read too. It must have been so hard to be without anything at that difficult time in your live. Its so important to instill the love of books in our children. Thanks for a wonderfu post.

Yes, you do have a lot of books! We have shelves in every room, and they're always overflowing with books, too. I never seem to get ahead on the shelf space.

What a wonderful post. You have had an interesting life, Reader Wil.
The most wonderful thing anyone can give me is a book, and I have been that way all of my life. I haunt garage sales and find beautiful books for very little!
I always have at least two or three books going at once!
How wonderful to curl up and disappear into another place. I love it!

Oh my gracious! You have a gorgeous home. It looks like something out of an Ikea catalog. Lovely and tasteful.

When we moved from Illinois to Hawaii, we had to donate, give away and sell almost all our books. We still sent over about 10 boxes of books but we sadly left behind most of them. It's OK. Now that we're here, we're once again treasuring our books, too.

Such a warm and beautiful and intelligent way to decorate.

I am a lover of books, too, Reader Wil, but I don't think I have as many as you:) I think it's so important to foster a love of reading in our children; with a house full of books like yours, it's no wonder your children are readers, too.

I just noticed your quote on your side bar about happy people making the best of what they have--wonderful quote!

What wonderfully neat and tidy bookshelves, besides being so prolific. I would love to spend time in your library, Read.

Books have always brought me to worlds that I would otherwise never see.
Wow. I don't think I 'know' of anyone in real life that was in a concentration camp. Certainly adds a perspective to life that the rest of us will not have.
Very humbling.

moongipsies said...

wonderful wonderful books....

jay said...

I love reading too, and my house looks remarkably like yours, with books and bookcases everywhere!

Being without books in the concentration camp must have been torment. Bad enough to endure it at all, but without the distraction and comfort of reading? That's cruel, indeed. :(

How exciting to have so many books and a place for each. Great R - without reading, where would we be.

Q said...

I also am a reader.
Long ago the books took over in my house. I cannot imagine life without my books.
Wonderful R!

My wife was getting rid of some books today. Unless it's ancient reference book superseded by another, I can almost never do so.
