that's My World The Port of Rotterdam

Click on slide for a better view!

Sunday morning, my daughter, grandson and I left on our bicycles for Krimpen a/d IJssel to catch the waterbus, which is a catamaran,to Rotterdam. We wanted to attend the Harbour Days. In Rotterdam we met with a friend and her two children. There were crowds everywhere, which made cycling a bit awkward for me. But we saw a lot of ships, among others the fabulous, big cruise ship "Grand Princess". We enjoyed the tour, even while the weather wasn't sunny. We couldn't complain though, because it was dry and not cold.
The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe. From 1962 to 2004, it was the world's busiest port; then it was superseded by Shanghai. Rotterdam is situated on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas ('New Meuse'), one of the channels in the delta formed by the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The name Rotterdam derives from a dam in the Rotte river.

Beautiful skies, even though they are cloudy. And my, what a bridge! Thank you, Reader Wil!

Beautiful sky scrapers across the channel. It looks like fun to go in small boats in the water here.

What a fun, lovely and interesting place, Wil! And your captures are marvelous -- all of them! I really love the tables right beside the water! What fun to have lunch there!

Enjoy your day!

It looks a lovely day although it is cloudy = Rotterdam sounds interesting - cycling sounds wonderful - and with family - what could be better.

I spent half a day in Rotterdam about 16 years ago, Wil, and liked what I saw - but usually when we come to the Netherlands we come to spend time in Amsterdam. I enjoyed seeing your photos from last Sunday.

What a great day you had! Those models are wonderful, especially floating on the water.
Our new Bridge of Strings in Jerusalem is so much like the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam. That Calatrava must be a busy man.
Thanks for showing us that huge harbor.

What fun. I felt like I was walking along with you and seeing everything! I'd like to walk in the ball -- just once! Lovely skies. I really enjoy seeing life on the water. Thanks so much, Wil!

What a great place to go as a family. I love the white bridge that almost looks like a sail. The model boats look like fun for the children. Beautiful shots.

Always love a bridge. Have to say those skies look so familiar to ours. Lovely looking harbour to me, but I do like a harbour too as we all know.

Great shots of a busy, beautiful port and city. I really like that suspension bridge's unusual design. Thanks for the tour!

Great photos Wil. Did they allow people to get inside of the large ball? That would have been fun.

Well illustrated Will. Pity it was such a dull day weather wise.

That is a grand harbor. When I saw the title of your post it reminded me of Jacques Brel singing :
“Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui chantent
Les rêves qui les hantent …..

It could have been the port of Rotterdam as well.

Oh I vaguely recall my history lesson, the port of Rotterdam, the busiest in the world. Thanks for taking us there, Wil.

I popped in here through Indrani's blog today. Thanks for the tour through the port. I loved your heron snaps and I adore your new header! We have many bridges crossing the Nile at different parts of the city but each is guarded by police with a mounted R1 rifle on their vehicle. I still want to get a few photos and will have to ask permission from somewhere...

Love the mixture of old and new buildings and the yellow boats. The Erasmus bridge is something else. Wonderful trip.

Mooie slideshows heb je hier op staan. Moest bij "The secret of the Gnomes" direct aan vroeger denken want deze hadden wij in de Nederlandstalige versie.

I really like that you cycle so much. I really miss it as the hills are too steep here.
The detail on those models was wonderful.
That ball looks like fun.
Great day and thanks for taking us along.
