Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday Y for Yoghurt

Posted by Picasa

I love yoghurt and started eating it after the war. We made our own yoghurt with something we called a yoghurt-plant, but which was probably a bacterium.

Big brother is feeding her yoghurt!

She loves it, but then she loves anything eatable and edible!

Wikipedia: "There is evidence of precultured milk products being produced as food for at least 4,500 years. The earliest yoghurts were probably spontaneously fermented by wild bacteria.

The oldest writings mentioning yoghurt are attributed to Pliny the Elder,
(AD 23 – August 25, AD 79),  a Roman author, naturalist, and natural philosopher, as well as naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire who remarked that certain nomadic tribes knew how "to thicken the milk into a substance with an agreeable acidity". An early account of a European encounter with yoghurt occurs in French clinical history: Francis I( 1494 – 1547) suffered from a severe diarrhoea which no French doctor could cure. His ally Suleiman the Magnificent sent a doctor, who allegedly cured the patient with yoghurt. Being grateful, the French king spread around the information about the food which had cured him.

Yoghurt was first introduced to the United States by Armenian immigrants Sarkis and Rose Colombosian.
Yoghurt's popularity in the United States was enhanced in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was presented as a health food. By the late 20th century yoghurt had become a common American food item and Colombo Yogurt was sold in 1993 to General Mills, which discontinued the brand in 2010."

When I was in Australia, I learned to like eating my cereal with yoghurt. That was a lot of fun. Your granddaughter is just the most beautiful, adorable little baby. I LOVE that header photo.

Yummy! Gorgeous little one enjoying the best of life.
I have a Keffir 'plant' and make my own. The culture is like a bunch of tapioca nd works best in sterile milk at 39 C.

We found when our Dutch friends came over Wil, that they love buttermilk to drink. No-one here drinks it. I find difference in things like this very interesting considering what a small distance there is between our countries. I love yoghourt too though.

I love yoghurt but try to get the low fat variety. After running out of milk once, I mixed yoghurt with my cereal...well...never have it with milk anymore! It's like having dessert for breakfast. Yum!

Hi - personally I hate yoghurt - always taste sickly to me - thanks for the comment on my Stockport blog - yes we get the same miserable weather as yourself - a few days of warm sunshine followed by sudden cold wind and rain just as we are getting used to some warmth.

The link is at the bottom with all the rest of the parties! Plus the "Y" words are in bold. I don't know what you would be referring too?

Big blue eyes and rosy cheeks! I think the yogurt must agree with her. I have just recently found Oikos, a Greek yogurt. I love it.

What a delightful Y post! I can remember my first encounter with yogurt when I was about 11 years agd. My brownie troop had taken a trip to New York City, and we were eating in a small diner when one of the girls noticed someone ordering something that looked like pudding in a cup. We decided to order it and all take a taste, but it was too sour to us and after the reaction of the first taster, no one else would try it! :-) I love yogurt now, but rarely get the plain variety which was all there was in my early days. Love the fruity taste! Oh, the baby is SOOOO sweet! By the way, I figured you had a connection to Australia because of past posts and love seeing that you have half-aboriginal children for grandkids. I appreciated your comments so much on my post and am just now getting back to you! So sorry!
