ABC Wednesday, Our World Tuesday, O for Orange

Next week this time our new King will be inaugurated in Amsterdam. We don't have  crownings for our monarchy. Some people think that the crown is too big for a king's head.

The Monarchy of the Netherlands is constitutional and as such, the role and position of the monarch are defined and limited by the constitution of the Netherlands.
The constitution refers to the monarch of the Kingdom of the Netherlands as "The King". This is an indication of the role and refers equally to a man or a woman.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands has been an independent monarchy since 16 March 1815 and has been governed by members of the House of Orange-Nassau since.

Our kingdom is a young one, before that time the members of the House of Orange ruled the country as Stadtholders to begin with William the Silent.
In office 1544–1584 He was assassinated in Delft in 1584.

How interesting! This is all new information to me. Your Royal Family is picture perfect.

This post is a perfect example of what "Our World"is meant to be ...teaching so beautifully and painlessly about a part of the world we know nothing about!

And remember, one of the Oranges also became king of England. Married to a Stuart, William and Mary's taking of the throne led to the Glorious Revolution and the first Bill of Rights.

Near my home is a State Park named after Queen Wilhelmina. A hotel was built on the site in 1898 and named Wilhelmina Inn in honor of Queen Wilhelmina

Lovely portrait. They all look so healthy and happy in the photos, and I hope that life treats them well. Must be an terrific burden at times, but the perks probably compensate. Hope so! Kate, ABC Team

When your young cricket team came here for matches they wore the bright orange outfits and were endearingly called the Orangies!!

How fascinating for O! I hope this new chapter will be a good one. (There is a Princeton myth here, that the university colors include orange because our main 1700s building - Nassau Hall - is named for William III of the House of Nassau...or Prince of Orange!:)

I'm glad we still have monarchies. We need the past to make sense of the present and form wisdom for the future.

Thank you for creating this informative post. My family moved into a community of people of Norwegian descent in 1960. I also had a friend, while we were in elementary school, by the last name of Stadtlander. I am going to assume the family was originally from Norway.
