ABC Wednesday, K for Kibbutz

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.We started round 10 of the fascinating meme of ABC. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with K.

A kibbutz is a collective community based on acriculture in Israël. The first kibbutz, Degania Alef, was founded in 1910.

Men and women had to work in the fields, and factories. The children were playing and later studying under the supervision of trained nurses and teachers.
Everything was shared. People didn't get payed for their work, but they had everything they needed, like board and lodging, education. Meals were taken together

In addition to its 350 cow dairy herd, crop fields, almond orchards, banana, date and avocado plantations, Degania Bet industrialized in the 1960s with Degania Sprayers, now a green industry; in 1984 it opened the Degania Silicone factory. An additional source of income is its kibbutz cottage tourist accommodation, and it specializes in organized bicycle tours. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism. In recent decades, some kibbutzim have been privatized and changes have been made in the communal lifestyle.

On our trip to the north of Israel we stayed in the kibbutz Deganya Bet and from this place we took dayly the bus to visit the sights around the Sea of Galilee.
Our group consisted of 44 members.

I volunteered one summer (MANY years ago) on a kibbutz. I worked in the fields climbing trees and picking pears. The kibbutz, Kibbutz Saad was in the Negev (south) and so we were in our trees by 5:00AM and finished by noon. LOADS of fun and a fascinating view into a very different world.

If I'm not mistaken, Kibbutz Degania was featured in the file Exodus. I also think it was filmed on location and you may want to see what it looked liked over 50 years ago.

Great post, enjoy the rest of your travels.

What a beautiful place. The Kibbutz certainly seems to work well. Perhaps we should all take a lesson from it.
Enjoy your holiday in a fascinating land.

I have always thought it rather a strange philosophy Wil, but as long as the members enjoy that way of life then I am sure it is right for them.

Wonderful post Wil. I loved learning about something I know so little about. I do think I could live like that but will probably never get to find out.
How lucky for you to see it in person.

So, that's what a kibbtuz looks like? I thought they were really primitive, but not so! Enjoy the rest of our trip!

How wonderful to stay in a Kibbutz and see how they operate... This one looks very modern and well cared for and a great subject for a K word.

I had a college friend who went to live and work in a kibbutz in the 60's. Lost touch with her afterwards, but she died young with an undiagnosed faulty heart problem. I'm sure they loved her there in the kibbutz. I remember her as a sweet and hard working girl.

I didn't expect a kibbutz to look like that. It's really quite luxurious. I'm so glad you're having such a great time.

Nice memories of our stay in Degania Bet, Wil. My favorite parts were their breakfasts and the hammock. :)

Very nice photos. I guess these kibbutz are like communes in the US but they are more upscale.

I remember that a lot of young Germans went to work in a Kibbutz or building new once in the 50th for the people who survived the concentration camps and others of course. That way they wanted to do something for what their parents or at least the Hitler government had done to the Juifs.
