ABC Wednesday, D for Dordrecht

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.We started round 10 of the fascinating meme of ABC. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with D.

In August last year a friend of mine and I went to Dordrecht for a walk through the town, which is very old and still well preserved. The weather was fine and our trip on the ferry from Krimpen aan den IJssel to Dordt was delightful. On arrival in Dordt we first saw a restaurant where we enjoyed our morning coffee and apple pie. Then we set off to see the town and take photos. You can see more details if you click on the photos.

Dordrecht historically in English named Dort, is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It is the fourth largest city of the province, having a population of 118,601 in 2009. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland and has a rich history and culture.

Wonderful photos of such a charming place. It makes me desire to visit.
I love your banner picture of the family ice skating on the canal behind your home.

Love all the old (by US standards) towns in Europe. Your brief bio interested me too because my 4th grade teacher in Minnesota was a Dutch woman who had grown up in Indonesia. I believe she made it back to Holland before war broke out but a sister did not and spent the war years in a camp as well.

You've created some wonderful collages of your pictures of Dordrecht. Thank you for sharing these sights with us, and thank you, too, for the map to help us locate it.

Now this is amazing, Wil. I somehow had it in the back of my mind that Dordrecht was a very old city (even though I've never been there) but it is the oldest in Holland, you said. Well, it looks lovely.
What really caught my eye today was your header photo. The yellow sled sure looks safer on the ice than the other baby's stroller with wheels.
All the best,
K

And I would not have guessed that Dordrecht was the oldest city.

I really like your banner photograph. One of the first things I learned about the Netherlands was how the canals freeze over in the winter. It doesn't often get that cold in England where I was living then. Lovely old city.

My, you really had a lovely walk. What beautiful architecture. Like George, I appreciate the map to see just where it is located. Thanks for letting us come along.

It does lookl a very attractive city. Has it no ugly modern buildings at all? Or are they forbidden by the authorities?!

It looks like a very cosy town ! Unfortunately I have never been there. Besides Maastricht, the Veerse Mer (Vlissingen) Rotterdam and of course Amsterdam, I haven't been anywhere else in Holland.

Oh yea! We were there! What fun! I love your header photo. It reminds me of Hans Brinker.
