Our World Today, ABC Wednesday, Y for Year 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to Our World Tuesday! This meme continues in memory of the work of Klaus Peter, whose "that's My World" brought people together from around the world every Monday to share the wonders therein--big and small. Please click on our new logo for "Our World Tuesday" in the sidebar.

The year 2011 was a very turbulent, tempestuous one. It started with unbalanced weather all over the world. There was a flooded area in Queensland as large as Germany and France. For me this was all very scary as my daughter lives there. Her house was okay and dry, but she stayed with friends in a house on a hill surrounded by water. This was January. Then came the horrific tsunami in Japan, which shocked the world. Especially when it caused a meltdown in the nuclear plant of Fukushima.
There were earthquakes in New Zealand, in many countries in Asia, recently in Turkey and the Philippines. The peoples of the Arab world revolted against their rulers, most of them were dictators. Gadaffi was killed, so was Osama bin Laden.
Fortunately there was also more pleasant news, like the royal wedding of Kate and William in April.

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.We started round 9 of the fascinating meme of ABC. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with Y.

Natural and unnatural disasters seeme to be the norm these days. Even sleepy little Adelaide has drive by shootings and murders galore now. That was something that happened very rarely, now it an everyday event.
A we get older we become filled with nostalgia for the good old days but when I remember my youth with WWII, Stalin exterminating 20 million of his own people, Hitler accounting for 6 million Jews and all the military personnel of both sides as well as the civilians who died, it does not appear so much better then than it is now. I wonder when people will learn?

Yes, let's hope for a quieter world this year.

I love your ice skating picture.

There was flooding in Brazil in Jan 2011, killed 500 people, and it got zero coverage in the US.

Maybe this will be a better YEAR, Wil, though frankly, I doubt it.

I do love your header Wil - it is like a modern day equivalent of one of those old Dutch masters which I love so much.

Certainly a quieter and more peaceful world is what I am wishing for -- so many disasters this past year! I, too, love your ice skating picture! I do hope you have a year filled with love and laughter and joy!

What a wonderful way to incorporate ABCW and the New Year. We certainly had lots to be thankful for this past year, although as you say there were a lot of disasters around the world. Wishing you all the best for 2012.

2011 was definitely an interesting year, and I suspect 2012 will be too. I love your header photo, it brings back memories of skating on the canals and ponds growing up in Holland. It certainly wasn't something you could do every year, as they often didn't freeze properly!

Great post and recap of the 2011 year in the news. It seems there is always something good and bad happening everywhere. It is very sad to see such tragedies happening. I pray 2012 is a great year for everyone. I wihs you all the best, Happy New Year!

I like your header, ice skating on the frozen river.

I pray for this year, less disasters, man made or natural.

We started out with some little disasters here in NZ and a 7 earthquake in Japan. The world keeps rumbling. Hope it will quiet down everywhere

Yes, it was quite a year, Wil.
I love your header photo. I've been thinking about young people skating on frozen canals in The Netherlands!
I hope 2012 is a better year for you and your family.

Thanks for this review of 2011. It's just too bad that there couldn't have been fewer floods and earthquakes and more happy weddings.

Looking back on the year 2011 there were some traumatic events which left heartache and tragedy in their wake but also wonderful acts of compassion and kindness which touched many hearts .
Trusting you have a safe healthy and much blessed 2012 Will xx

Nature was really in a snit in
2011 with dreadful disasters. I certainly hope 2012 is much kinder and gentler.
Love the header. Brings back nice memories.

It is nice to summarize the year, good or bad as it gives one a chance to reflect on it all. HNY to you!

Your blog is so very dear and special, and you are such a special lady. I wish you were my neighbor so we could sit and share the stories of our lives and teaching. I think the way you put these collages together is wonderful....the good and the bad. I am such a displaced Anglophile so have watched everything that has ever come on the tele if it has anything to do with the United Kingdom. Thanks for putting all the photos together for us. Hope you and your family have a happy and photo filled year in 2012. genie

It was a wild year, weatherwise and people wise, to be sure. But there were a few pleasant spots. Your photos are wonderful - looks like you attended the wedding.

I love your collage!

Youth is my Y, have a great year of the dragon.

I know I can't close my eyes to all these tragedies, but I prefer by far William and Kate's wedding !

We had a terrible storm here too, not to compare with a hurrican, but still, trees fell, roofs flow away some floodings, but ... it's quiet warm, probably the same in your place.

2011 was a turbulent year indeed, but so are most years if one ponders a bit. Let us hope that 2012 takes a lesson from your header - peaceful play :-)

A belated Happy New Year to you and your dear ones!
