Our World Tuesday, ABC Wednesday, W for Weighing-house, Gouda
De Weighing-house in Gouda was built at the Market of Gouda, according to a design of Pieter Post in 1668
The building was mainly used as a weighing place for cheese.
The Waag( Weighing-house) was to be higher than the surrounding buildings. They had to be at least six feet lower than the Waag.
The Waag serves now as the Cheese and Trades museum.
Here you see how the cheese was weighed on this enormous balance.
The following photos show the inside of the building now. My friends and I bought and tasted a lot of cheese here.
Welcome to Our World Tuesday! This meme continues in memory of the work of Klaus Peter, whose "that's My World" brought people together from around the world every Monday to share the wonders therein--big and small. Please click on our new logo for "Our World Tuesday" in the sidebar.
With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with W.

What a delightful look at a great part of your world, Wil! I LOVE cheese so I would definitely enjoy a visit there! Wonderful photos and information as always! Hope you have a beautiful week as the holiday approaches! Enjoy!
Sylvia
What a yummy place to visit. Thanks for the tour, I didn't gain a pound.
Back on my feet again and am catching up.
"Way" to go, Wil! I'd love to visit your cheese museum. The building is quite beautiful.
This makes me feel hungry, Wil. Oh, yes, it is early afternoon here. I think I'll have cheese for lunch today.
I enjoyed your photos of this interesting building (very interesting about the other buildings having to be smaller) and its original purpose and present contents.
In case I don't have another opportunity this week, I'd like to wish you all the best of the holiday season, and for the new year.
Luv, K
I love how a cheese world stepped into an old weighing world! The result is such a unique place! Fascinating photos!
How amazing to have a weighing house for cheeses - a wonderful place with those unique sets of scales - I would enjoy visiting and sampling the many cheeses - Yum!
Wishing you a wonderful and Blessed Christmas Will. xx

Interesting museum for cheese such an ancient building. Thanks for sharing this/
I think I would do a lot of sampling of cheeses if I could visit this weighing-house. Thanks for sharing these fascinating pictures (and information) with us.
Fabulously interesting. Love the inside of the cheese house and all those huge rounds of cheese!
So much cheese... definitely a nice place to visit.
I wish I could have joined you for the cheese tasting and to stock up on a few.
I hope your Christmas is a happy one and that you have some family around.
I would have to go there and have samples. If I were lost on a desert island, all I'd want is CHEESE! All sorts of CHEESE! LOL

Ummm, yummm, cheese. I love cheese. The museum looks fascinating and my goodness that's a huge weighing scale.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Wil.
It's good that a building like that still functions, rather than fall into disrepair.
love the cheese, but also the general atmosphere.

What a lot of cheese. The first cheese I ever ate were Dutch Cheese.
My Dad had gone to UK to study his university. When he came home, we were little kids to teens. He said he didn't want us to be country bumpkins and never had cheese. So he bought some cheese and we all tasted it. Not that we like it with our Chinese palate.
Reader Wil, I was going to post that Christchurch Carousel made by the Dutch Artist. But I can't find it and my husband is overseas for work, so I can't ask him where my Christchurch photos are. But when I read about him, I thought of you. You sit on the carousel while waiting for the bus. So you don't get bored.
I WISH you a Great Christmas and a WONDERFUL 2012.
A special building in which to weigh cheese? How interesting!
Even though I am somewhat lactose intolerant, I still try to eat cheese in small amounts. The weighing house is simply fascinating!
Wonderful selection of cheese and information. I'd love to sample a large amount. :) Terrific pictures.
Lovely tour of the wonderful place.
Happy Holidays!
i love to see what's more inside of that weighing house...
The inside of this cheese making place in Gouda looks much more interesting than I saw a long time ago somewhere in Brabant. Love all the Anton Pieck paintings on your side bar - so delightful:) Have a very merry Christmas Wil -and all the best for 2012!
Looking at those cheese wheels always makes me hungry.
Do you by any chance know if the scales were also used for witch weighing, like the ones in Oudewater?
We have reached the season for weighing ourself in more ways than one, so this was a very appropriate W. Merry Christmas to you and the ones you care for.
I am WAY behind in my commenting due to the holidays and traveling so am trying to get caught up. My, wouldI love to see this weighing house. I had never heard of them before this. The structure is so old world looking....absolutely beautiful...and the inside with all of its goodies is divine. Thanks for sharing this one. I LOVE it. genie
Oh, Wil, this is so interesting! I loved learning about the weighing house! How I would love getting to come to the Netherlands some time. I would so enjoy tasting all the cheeses! :-)
