The Erasmusbrug ("Erasmus Bridge") is a cable stayed bridge across the Nieuwe Maas river, linking the northern and southern halves of the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The Erasmusbrug was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The 802 metre long bridge has a 139 metre-high asymmetrical pylon, earning the bridge its nickname of "The Swan".You can see why!

The southern span of the bridge has a 89 metre long bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in West Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.

The bridge is named after Erasmus, a famous Dutch Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, and a theologian. He was born in Rotterdam and lived from 1466 till 1536.

Thanks to Louis we can participate in this meme!

Wow! That's a very impressive bridge. It kind of reminds me of a bridge that Dina posted in Jerusalem. It must be very impressive to look at.

Kay is so right. Your Erasmusbrug is so similar to our new bridge in Jerusalem! You would feel right at home here, Wil.
From your picture I was sure it was a bridge by Calatrava, but your text says no.
Rotterdam--so much water!

Indeed, like a swan - and it reminds «Louis», too, of photos he's seen of bridge in Jerusalem. A fine contribution to Sunday Bridges.

I love this bridge. If I live in Rotterdam, I would probably be photographing it in every possible light and from every angle!

That is a dramatic looking bridge! I can see where it got it's name!

Yet another super cable-stayed bridge today for Sunday Bridges. Nice to read the history, too, Wil.

This is a most unusual bridge. The way that one lice of steel bends is awesome. Liked learning the story of its namesake. Great contribution this week...one impressive structure. genie

Wow a different style of bridge. It's too close to the water right?

These cables must be very strong. When I was in Christchurch, there is a Merry go Round bus stop designed by a Dutch man. I must post it for you.

my cousin also went to a Scandanavian cruise, so most likely, he came to your place,

These cruise are very expensive.
