For my birthday (4th December) I got a bag filled with articles from one of the Oxfam shops in the Netherlands. There was coffee, tea, rice, jam, chutney, sweets and more delicious things. I've always bought something from Oxfam or Unicef for my children and grandchildren on birthdays. But... I still didn't know the history of Oxfam, so I looked it up in Wikipedia!

Oxfam International is an international confederation of 14 organisations working with over 3,000 partners in around 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.

Oxfam was originally founded in Oxford in 1942 as the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief by a group of Quakers, social activists, and Oxford academics; this is now Oxfam Great Britain, still based in Oxford, UK.

Oxfam has numerous shops all over the world, which sell many fair-trade and donated items. They opened their first charity shop in 1948. The proceeds from these usually get paid to different charities or are used to further Oxfam's relief efforts around the globe. Much of their stock still comes from public donations but they currently also sell fair trade products from developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America, including handcrafts, books, music CDs and instruments, clothing, toys, food and ethnic creations. These objects are brought to the public through fair trade to help boost the quality of life of their producers and surrounding communities.

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.We started round 8 of the fascinating meme of ABC. For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with O.

Oh, I loved shopping in Oxfam when I lived in the UK. They also had a good veggie restaurant.

Interesting post, Wil. I knew about Oxfam's work but I had no idea that it goes back to 1942 and its charity shops to 1948!

Interesting cause although I've never heard of this group before. Every year we purchase our corporate Christmas cards from Unicef so we can contribute to their cause.

That looks like a great place to shop and you could feel good about spending your money knowing it would help.
Thanks for stopping by. I do wish I could share some of my rain. We had a drought last year so maybe yours will be ending soon also.

Good information, Wil. Now I will have to look them up and see what I can get. I miss, so much, some of the "Chinese" dishes I got in "Japan." That makes it tough to figure out what to look for in stores here that sell Japanese food.

We don't have Oxfam shops in Canada (at least not where I am) but I enjoy shopping there when I am in the UK.

Bravo for the work that Oxfam does. I have never seen a shop devoted to it though. Would love to shop there. Thanks for all the information too. I wasn't aware of its beginnings.

Even if it is a bit late, Happy Birthday to you!
I think the Oxfam sounds delightful!
If you are going to spend money, it might as well go to help a good cause.

I love your header - what a peaceful, delightful scene.

Thank you for telling us about this worthwhile organization. There don't appear to be Oxfam stores in the US.

Happy belated birthday!
