Sky Watch,Floods in Queensland

Continued flooding in Australia's Queensland state has put crocodiles and snakes in closer proximity to the people living in flooded-out areas, prompting authorities to warn the public about the unseen dangers under the water.

Rockhampton residents have reported seeing a greater number of snakes and other animals in the city, seeking higher ground in the wake of the floods. Along the swollen Fitzroy River, which runs through the city, there have even been some sightings of crocodiles, said Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carte.

I telephoned my daughter, who lives in Queensland and she told me that her house in Cooktown was okay. She is staying at Gympie now, where her friend's parents live. Their house is built in the hills and so it's dry. However to get back to Cooktown will take them three days and they have to cover a large area which is flooded. So you understand that I am quite worried and I am so sorry for the poor victims of the flood.

In the summer of 2009 we had heavy rainfall in my country, but that was nothing compared to Australia's downpour.

«Louis» certainly understands your concern about your family there. The idea of the snakes is very creepy to «Louis»! (shuddder!)

I hope this disaster will end sometime soon. Is it still raining?
Oi, poor people.

It's quite devastating. Our thoughts are with those people who have lost everything. We are having a special casual dress day at work today (wear something yellow for the normally 'Sunshine' state) and all staff are being asked to donate money to the Queensland flood appeal.

Those floods are absolutely terrible Wil - and poisonous snakes and crocodiles too. It doesn't bear thinking about.

Thank you for doing the research into glass. A historian friends tells me thatit was quite late before ordinary people could afford to fit it into their windows though.

Yes, that is what it looks like and the forecast does not look good. Last night it was pouring again.

I was worried about your daughter but was not sure where she lived in Australia.
Glad to know she and her home are safe but it is a terrible disaster.
I have been in a flood and it is devastating. You lose everything.
My prayers are with them.

I've been reading about these floods, and the size of the affected area is almost unbelievable. I'm glad your daughter is safe and I hope she will continue to be so.

We hear the flooding news with great dismay. I know it will take a long while for things to get back to normal, but it would be nice if it would start now and stop raining!

Oh no, here hoping and praying that flood would soon dry up.

It's a sad and terrible sight. Hope the things and situation get better son. Queensland is such a beautiful place. May it's former glory be restored as soon as possible. May all the flood victims and your family be safe and away from the crocodiles and snake that you fear about.

We have been seeing the flood damage on our TV evening news; it is just shocking.
I do hope your daughter will be ok as she makes her way home again.

We've been hearing about this in Hawaii. They said the affected area was the size of Texas. Good grief! I sure hope it all ends soon.

Thank you for asking, dear Wil. It rains a lot but we are not flooded. The flooded area is further north and as big as New south wales which consists of 809.444 km2 or 312.528 sq.mi. In European terms France and Germany together.

Cannot imagine the horror of flooding or what lurks under the water either. Hoping this ends soon. May your daughter stay safe and sound.
