ABC Wednesday, T for Taizé

Posted by Picasa

Iedere nacht verlang ik naar u, O God,
ik hunker naar u met heel mijn ziel.

Every night I long for you, oh God
I long for you with all my soul.

From 28th December tens of thousands of young people, members of the Taizé Community in France, will come together to Rotterdam from all countries of Europe. They are looking for ways of mutual trust, and having confidence in other religions, and various Christian traditions. All these young people have to find a place to stay for five days in Rotterdam and in villages and towns in the neighbourhood of Rotterdam. So I volunteered to have four people as guests. They will celebrate New Year's Eve with us and on New Year's Day they will have a service together with us. It's going to be a great happening!

The Taizé Community is an ecumenical Christian monastic order in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. It is composed of about 100 brothers who come from Protestant and Catholic traditions. The brothers come from about 30 countries across the world. The monastic order has a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation. It was founded in 1940 by Brother Roger Schutz. The community was known for helping Jewish refugees during the war.

The community has become one of the world's most important sites of Christian pilgrimage. Over 100,000 young people from around the world make pilgrimages to Taizé each year for prayer, Bible study, sharing, and communal work. Through the community's ecumenical outlook, they are encouraged to live in the spirit of kindness, simplicity and reconciliation

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with T.

I'll have to fins out more about this community. I know I've heard the name before. Thanks, Reader Wil!

Wil, this is the best post ever!
Those four young people are very lucky to have you as hostess. You will add so much to their pilgrimage of trust on earth.
I love Taize and everything about it.
And thank you for the beautiful song which I have never heard. Is it new? Is there a whole CD of Taize songs in Dutch?

Alas, my days at Taize were too short, but it gave me the blessed opportunity to be in the evening prayer with dear Frere Roger, not long before the cruel hand of fate took him from us.
God bless him for all he has set in motion.
And God bless you, Wil, for being a part of it all.

Oh how wonderful for you! I loved the music - so beautiful and haunting. And so nice for both you and the 4 young people you'll be hosting. It will make the entire Christmas season so much more meaningful.

What beautiful music Wil. Thank you.
I know nothing about this order and will further research it, especially the story about Brother Roger Schutz. You always make me learn, thank you.
Those four youngsters I am sure will gain as much as they give with their visit. Enjoy eachother.

Actually I know a bit about Taize. My current church (Presbyterian) and especially my previous church (Methodist) have incorporated elements of Taize periodically. In fact, for a couple years, the Methodist church did a full Taize service in the chapel every Saturday afternoon. It was beautiful.

I was sad to hear about Brother Roger. (Good name, that.)

What an honor to have the young people stay with you. I am looking forward to hearing all about it.
The movement is just what our crazy world needs right now.

How wonderful that you are hosting these people, Wil. Why would anyone want to kill Brother Schutz? I love the idea of mutual trust and respect between religions. I wish all religions could have that.

Thanks for the History. I have not heard of this group. The Roman Catholic brothers that came to Borneo were irish.

What a wonderful post - I feel honoured that something so wonderful was found appropriate for ABC Wednesday - as from the comments it is so evident the joy this brought to so many of us The music is beautiful and I will now be listening to this for the next hour or so. To have 4 guests over the holiday period must be awesome and I am sure you will be blesses - just as your guests will be
What a terrible shame about Brother Roger - what happened?

My heart skipped a beat when I clicked on your blog and saw your header! Anton Pieck! My Husband was working in Rotterdam in 2001 and we were fortunate to go over and visit. One of our the most favorite things we did was take a trip to De Eftling (sp?). I fell in love with his artwork. Thanks for sharing, Nan

What beautiful voices. Great idea and thought of the people all coming together like that. Good luck with the four guest you will have. Hope you all have a lovely time. Also I like the new heading of your blog. Looks cold, like it's looking here at the moment. Have a wonderful time ahead and happy holidays.

There is a Taizé service at the Mercy Center in Burlingame, on the peninsula south of San Francisco on the first Friday night of each month. «Louis» et Mme la Vache attend as often as possible. When he lived in France, «Louis» wanted to visit Taizé in Dijon, but was never able to go.

A fine post, Wil.
