that's My World, ABC Wednesday K for Kröller-Müller Museum

Posted by Picasa

In September I wrote someting about Hoenderloo and the national park of the Hoge Veluwe in Gelderland( see map). In this park there are several buildings. One of them is the gallery of Kröller-Müller, or as we call it the Kröller-Müller museum. It's a modern building and houses many paintings of Vincent van Gogh and other Dutch painters, but also those of other European painters of the 19th and 20th century. For the children there was a quiz which had them look for details of certain paintings. Outside there are statues, some of them modern others traditional.
The museum is named after Helene Kröller-Müller, an avid art collector who was one of the first to recognize Van Gogh's genius and collected his works. In 1935, she donated her whole collection to the state of the Netherlands. In 1938 the museum, designed by Henry van de Velde opened. The sculpture garden was added in 1961 and the new exhibition wing, designed by Wim Quist, opened in 1977.

What a marvelous museum and I do love Van Gogh! Terrific post for both days, Wil! Loved seeing pictures of the paintings. I think the pet thing has some how attached itself to your photo display, but just how I don't know. But I do know it can be annoying! Hope your week is off to a great start! Enjoy!

Sorry, Wil. I have no idea how you can do that. I did enjoy your slide show though. That must be a wonderful museum.

Such a generous woman, that Helen was. She knew quality when she saw it!

no idea how to get rid of SPP. I don't mind them, I am used to ignoring little things like that.

Oh, this is great, Wil. I've saved the information because we will be in the Netherlands in March and April, and who knows where we will go? We don't know yet.

Thanks Wil, for sharing your lovely visit to the museum. I especially enjoyed it knowing I will never visit it in person.

About the animal thingy, I just click in the little x in the right hand corner of the animal thingy and it disappears. So no problem for me while viewing your lovely slide show.

You always have such interesting and educational posts each week, I can see you put much work and thought into them. Again Thanks.

The Dutch have such an array of museums that one can only be envious. But then you have had lots of Great masters, too.

Regarding the "Pets", it seems to be part of the sideshow program. I suppose you would have to buy a full license to get completely rid of it. I can block it from my PS (in Firefox), but then I block the whole slideshow!

Lovely pictures Wil and I liked the map as I have been wondering about the areas of the Netherlands. Do pop over and see my photographs of your wonderful country - we had such an interesting five days there last week.

What a beautiful museum. The reflecting pools and walls make me think of a museum in my part of the world. Great take on the letter K.

It would be wonderful to visit this museum and see the artistry of Van Gough and others. Thank you for sharing the information with us.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience at this special place. I love the way the outside is brought in though I'm sure they must have the paintings in interior spaces so they aren't exposed to the light.

It would be heavenly to see some Van Gogh in person.

Anything that houses Van Goghs has to be a good place. Great pictures.

How fortunate the Dutch are that Helene Kröller-Mülle recognized van Gogh's genious.

I would love to be close to a museum that featured van Gogh's work. I still remember vividly the great travelling van Gogh exhibition in the late 50's. I soaked it up when we were living in Montreal. SO WONDERFUL TO SEE THEM IN THEIR GLORY RATHER THAN CONSTRICTED IN A BOOK.

Thanks Wil for sharing your culture filled world.

Helene Kröller-Müller must be a wonderful woman to donate her collection. Better for all the world to see than to be kept in the dust in a cellar in her children's home.

You are so good in making the slide. I have not tried to learn to do it.

Thought I would just pop back Wil to say how much we enjoyed the Netherlands. Yes, we did manage a train trip to the Hague for the afternoon, walking through the area of parliament, seeing where the Prime Minister had his office and where the state opening took place (we missed the state opening by a few days). We even saw your Foreign Minister being interviewed for television. We also saw your lovely Royal Palace and the gorgous shops on that street.
What a wonderful holiday we had.
