ABC Wednesday, U for Urban Legends(horror stories)

Posted by Picasa

U for Urban Legend.
"Urban Legends" are tales that have been passed from person to person, town to town, over the years and told as true stories.

It all happened on a holiday in France. A Dutch couple, their two children and the grandmother stayed at a camp site in the south of France for a fortnight. All went well and everybody was enjoying the wonderful warm weather and the surroundings until Grandma complained of a terrible headache and she felt terribly sick. Before the daughter and son-in-law could warn a doctor, she died. What to do now? If a doctor was sent for it would certainly mean that the police got involved, and would be investigating this sudden death and it would take a lot of trouble to explain this situation. It would also mean that they couldn't go home for a while, because of all the red tape which usually follows such an event. So the couple decided to wrap granny in a lot of canvas and put her body on the luggage rack of their car. So they set off for home. On their way they had to stop for a meal at a wayside restaurant. They parked their car at the carpark. They had a quick meal and ate it in silence, the four of them not feeling happy at all. When they returned to their car they saw to their horror, that the big canvas bundle had gone! Stolen!!

What happened next I don't know myself, for I made this story up!.(sort of... half of it at least ...LOL)
I believe Gran was never found again, but the empty canvas case was found lying in an empty ditch and there were some bones scattered around. They were presumably human, but as DNA was still not heard of at the time, and the children didn't report her missing, nobody thought of Granny.
My daughter suggested that she was not dead at all and recovered in the cold night air in the ditch. She crept out of the canvas case. She met a nice man her age and the couple started a bed and breakfast. All went well until many years later her daughter and family decided to stay in this B&B. Gran had to hide until they left.

More urban legends are to be found if you click on: Urban legends

This is a true legend, but not for the "faint-hearted"!!:

A couple checks into a hotel and have to put up with a foul odor in their room all night. They call the staff to complain and somebody figures out the stench is coming from the bed.

You're almost hoping at that point that it'll turn out the last guest just got drunk and pooped behind the headboard. But, no, the staff take off the mattress and discover the couple has been sleeping over the rotting body of a dead girl who had been stuffed in the box spring.

UCH... I sincerely hope that I didn't frighten you away from my blog!!!

I love urban legends - it is strange how many people believe them too.

Oh my both stories are horrible. I like the new header you're using. Time to stop and fix a bite of lunch. I worked all money, stuffing 31 tiny Santa stockings I crocheted with a book mark I made, two pencils, 2 really tiny candy canes, two midget tootsie rolls and a Christmas shaped eraser. Going to surprise the Granddaughter and take them to school for their Christmas party so she can pass one to each student in her class. I'll try to take a photo and post before I do that. Have a great day. Seems I don't have enough time lately to get around to all the blogs I want to visit.

J'aime bien l'hypothèse de votre fille !
Je n'avais jamais entendu parler de cette histoire...
Pour moi, les légendes urbaines, ce sont les rumeurs telles que des crocodiles dans les égouts denew York!!!!

Oh dear, Reader Wil, What a funny imagination you had today. And the real story is terrible. I wonder if that couple ever stayed in another hotel?

Urban legends are a hobby of mine and I just love it when people try to pass them for real stories, especially online. Snopes is another great resource for urban legends.
The photo made me giggle - I'm afraid I'm just weird like that.

That is not funny. I am heading for Florida soon and will have to spend one night in a motel while traveling. Guess how good I am going to sleep :)))
I enjoyed your story and really liked your daughters happy version of the ending.

Hi Wil,

Good story, Did you watch the Little Miss Sunshine. I think that's the movie about the little girl who wanted to win a performance competition.

Any way, the grand dad died in the hospital, and they would have to spend a lot of money to ship him interstate.

(Here's why when I read your story, I am reminded) They couldn't afford to do it, so they rolled the dead grand dad in sheets, and smuggled him out of the window into their van..

Cheers and happy shopping,

Ann

What a unique post today! I like your Daughter's ending to the story best:) The other story sounds like something from a TV crime show.

I remember when I first learned of urban legends. I had heard the story several times of a young woman who tried on a coat and was bitten many times by rattlesnakes inside. Apparently, a snake had laid eggs in the coat, and they finally hatched. I was so glad to learn that was all an urban legend!

I'm so glad I didn't read this BEFORE going on holiday! Gee .. I've just spent a couple of nights in a hotel in London, too. Didn't smell though. Whew!

LOL!

That first story reminds me of a Chevy Chase movie. I think it was called "Vacation." There was something about them being stuck with their aunt strapped to the top of the car. I remember hearing a bunch of these urban legends when I was growing up. Of course, in Hawaii we get a lot of legends about Madame Pele, the goddess of the volcanoes.

Ah vraiment ce sont des histoires bizarres. Pendant la saison de Noël je préfère des histoires un peu plus gaies – qu’en pensez-vous?

Wil Wil, only a blogger of your stature could get away with this! LOL!
