ABC Wednesday, M for Milford Sound in New Zealand

ABC was created by Denise Nesbitt and a team of experienced bloggers. Thank you all.For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar or Here. This week we are looking for words beginning with M.

During our stay on the South Island in January and February 2005, my daughter, her children and I stayed at various Holiday Parks. The one in Te Anau was very close to the MILFORD Sound. So we booked for a trip to this beautiful Sound. What a fjord is in Norway is called a sound in New Zealand. MILFORD Sound is called by the MAORIS : "Piopiotahi", which means "Place of the singing thrush", a bird which is now extict.
Pretty early in the mornig we were picked up by Dave, the driver of the van and our guide for the day. He was a terrific guide, who told us about wildlife on the island and showed a lot of interesting spots on a walk before we took the boat to the MILFORD Sound. He drew a picture of his van and us sitting there. The woman next to the driver was supposed to be me! LOL! The only other passengers apart from the five of us, were a very nice Australian couple!
During our boat trip we saw Bottlenose Dolphins and Southern Fur Seals. In the distance we saw the MITRE Peak, which rises directly from sealevel and is 1,692 metres(5,560 feet) high.

Wonderful it sounds reader wil. I didn't know that a sound was the same as a fiord - although I have heard of Milford sound.

Those mountains are awesome, they make ours look like beginner mountains. Just a beautiful country. Wonderful slides.
Very clever of your driver to draw that cartoon. You had a good seat.

I know how to say that Maori word like a Maori would! That's because there are Maori's in Hawaii too and some of our songs that we sing are Maori.
Thanks for the great post!

What marvellous memories this brings back - we had a wonderful personal guide too in 2001 - we never got far into the sound as the rain and wind was horrendous - so much so that one waterfall in the sound was being blown back upwards by the wind - on the road from Te Anaeu the waterfalls were merging like curtains. We went to Doubtful Sound the day after which was another wonderful journey.

I didn't know what a sound one and we have a sound here, south of the island. As always I come away learning a little more than yesterday. Such a beautiful area.

Oh, that brings back some memories! We took a trip to Milford Sound in 1988 - flight in a small plane (ouch, my ears!! LOL!) and then catamaran. It was incredible! I remember Mitre Peak, too!

Great 'M's!
