That's My World: The Netherlands
The Dutch flag
The Netherlans are divided in 12 provinces.
1 History
Dutch Republic 1581–1795 founded by the Prince of Orange, William the Silent, ancestor of the House of Orange. Before that time we were part of the Spanish Kingdom.
Under French influence 1795–1815. We were part of the French Empire under Napoleon. When Napoleon was defeated we became independent again as a kingdom.
Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1815-till today. We had first three kings, then three ruling Queens. Queen Beatrix is our queen at this moment.
The Netherlands is a country that is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is a parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy. The Netherlands is located in Northwestern Europe, and bordered by the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east. The capital is Amsterdam and the seat of government is The Hague.
The Netherlands is often called Holland, which is formally incorrect as North and South Holland are merely two of its twelve provinces. The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything appertaining to the
Netherlands.

I have visited only Amsterdam from The Netherlands and I was greatly impressed by the Rijksmuseum. I was particularly impressed by Johaness Vermeen's paintings and the truly splendid writing table displays.

Very well done Reader Wil. You must have been a good teacher. Concise, very informative and interesting. I have got to look further though into William the Silent. He sounds interesting and I want to know why he was silent.
Thank you.
Very interesting post. I just loved the historic facts in it. Some I knew and some I didn't. For example that about Holland I didn't know. I shall never again use that name.
A wonderful history and geography lesson. Thank you, enjoyed my visit very much.
This is very true people in the UK and here say Holland when they mean the Netherlands. Lots of places in the UK have Holland in their name.
A great info I love so much, a very good reminder and a bit of smile on my face. :)
My husband and I would love to see the Netherlands. His father was born in The Hague. Thank you for sharing.

Interesting changes, when I went to school, The Hague was the capital and Amsterdam the centre of trade. When did it change/
That was one good read!

Very interesting! My great, great grandfather was from Holland, whether North or South I do not know, but this is intersting! My step daughter is moving the Netherlands this fall. One day I may make it there :)

Thanks for the clear good explanation of your country. I think I've never seen a map of the provinces, so yours is a big help.

your world in a very concise and informative post. i learned something too :) never knew that it was part of spain.
thanks for sharing and have a great week.
Great history. I have met several people here at the motel from the Netherlands it is always a pleasure
Thanks for sharing your country's history.
How interesting. My last name (married name) is Dutch. There is little of the Dutch blood left coursing through my husband's veins, but the name has survived 9 generations in America. (With a few spelling changes.) One of our daughters could pass for a Dutch girl, however, and we gave her a Dutch name. (Or at least a Dutch spelling of a name that is also Scandinavian.) I have no Dutch roots personally, so know little about it. My daughters are intrigued, so I really liked this brief history.
