Victor HUGO was born in 1802 in Besançon and lived in France for the majority of his life. However, he was forced into exile during the reign of Napoleon III — he lived briefly in Brussels during 1851; in Jersey from 1852 to 1855; and in Guernsey from 1855 to 1870 and again in 1872-1873. There was a general amnesty in 1859; after that, his exile was by choice. Victor HUGO, who was the author of "Les Misérables, and " Notre Dame de Paris" ( The HUNCHBACK of Notre Dame) was a French poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, human rights activist and exponent of the Romantic movement in France. He died on 22 May 1885.

Great house and interesting history about Hugo!
Schitterend Wil, daar wordt een mens toch wel een beetje hebberig van zo af en toe vind je ook niet? Het lijkt wel een droom.... en ik hou van die stijl dus ik zou acuut verhuizen als ik de kans kreeg.
Lieve groet, Melody
I adore Les Mes, seen several productions. It is so nice to see where the author came from and his beginnings. I really like the idea of him re-using pieces to furniture to create new ones. The carvings are so intricate.

A beautiful home and garden - how nice that you got to see it, Wil.
The tapestries and all the woodwork are amazing. Kind of gaudy but the workmanship is wonderful.
Wonderful historical post and what a house ! Great photos!
Happy Week to you ~ ^_^
What a awesome house.
My ABC WEDNESDAY
I LOVE the red drawing room!

Did you watch "Les Misérables?
I didn't watch "Les Misérables", my husband is a scientifically minded person, and doesn't like watching shows. I did watch fiddler on the roof, a treat from my daughter.
I went to one class reunion where I was the teacher when I taught at 19. Some of the students looked older than me.
Fascinating, the exterior style of Hautville House is so different from the inside.
Fantastic shots from the mansion.
One would never guess at the splendid tile work and coffered rooms by looking at the exterior!
Wonderful to see the juxtaposition, thanks for sharing!
Grand mansions!

Thanks for this visual tour of the house of Victor Hugo! Looks quite grand, though I am personally not too sure about all that red in the drawing room :)
Wow! Quite an impressive home. I knew nothing about Victor Hugo. Now I want to learn more about him. Maybe then I'll finally be inclined to read one of his novels.
