ABC Wednesday, E for English broken here

This post is an "Oldie", because these past few weeks have been very hectic.

The books I used for teaching all kind of skills in English, such as listening, conversation, reading, and pronunciation

Some of the English books I used in various classes from beginners to advanced students.

It stands to reason that people whose native language isn't English keep making mistakes in this language. We try to use certain expressions, but this can sometimes turn out to be very funny. Even if we do our utmost to speak English correctly, there comes a moment that we say something wrong. Here are a few examples of people whose mother tongue is certainly not English!

IN A PARIS HOTEL ELEVATOR: Please leave your values at the front desk.

IN A HOTEL IN ATHENS: Visitors are expected to complain at the office between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m daily.

OUTSIDE A HONGKONG TAILOR SHOP: Ladies may have a fit upstairs.

ON THE MENU OF A SWISS RESTAURANT: Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.

And what to think of this ?
IN A BANGKOK DRY CLEANER'S: Drop your trousers here for best results.

Here another indecent proposal!
IN A ROME LAUNDRY: Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time!

More indecencies!
IN A ZURICH HOTEL:Because of the impropriety of entertaining guests of the opposite sex in the bedroom, it is suggested that the lobby be used for this purpose.

It's going to be dangerous if you want to go to Rhodes!
IN A RHODES TAILOR SHOP: Order your summers suit. Because is big rush we will execute customers in strict rotation.

IN THE LOBBY OF A MOSCOW HOTEL ACROSS A RUSSIAN ORTHODOX MONASTRY: You are welcome to visit the cemetry where famous Russian and Soviet composers, artists and writers are buried daily except Thursday.

And what does this mean???
IN AN AUSTRIAN HOTEL CATERING TO SKIERS: Not to perambulate the corridors in the hours of repose in the boots of ascension.

These are hilarious! When I used to teach French, I had to keep reminding the students that you can't literally translate word for word. But I do find other languages fascinating. Hope you're doing well,

Leslie

Hilarisch Wil.... het vertalen wil inderdaad vaak wel zeer komische teksten opleveren.

Oh Wil, these are so funny.
My native language is English and I still make a mess trying to speak properly.
Hope your life settles down a bit for you. Great post.

These are funny. But I bet anyone hearing me try to speak other languages would have a good time with my mistakes. Learning English would be hard enough, but throw in our slang- heaven help us!

Some of these are hillarious! I have seen some funny ones here in India too. The one I will always remember was - child beer served here!

Oh, so funny!
I especially like the last one, best translated as: Do not walk around in your heavy hiking boots in the middle of the night!
I have heard that English is the hardest language to learn.
Have a great day!

So funny Wil ... but English is such a complicated language you can't blame those for whom it is a second language for making these mistakes (as you say). We here in the US (most of us) should feel a little bit ashamed actually because we don't make enough effort to speak another language, while so many people in other countries can speak English fluently (or almost fluently ;>) while it is not their native tongue.

PS: Even the title of your post made me laugh! Perfect.

Hello Wil,
This is so funny made me laugh out loud, I knew you were a teacher but didn't
know you taught English. Did you teach any other languages, I wonder ?
When I took early retirement I enrolled at the local University where I studied French language, literature and politics, which I loved. It was such a thrill later, to holiday in France and be able to converse (well almost) with the local people.
I hope you have recovered from you illness and are back at home.
I was sorry to learn that you were unwell.

Best wishes,
Di.
