ABC Wednesday, V for Venomous

Australia's snake variety

Australia has some 140 species of land snake, and around 32 species of sea snakes have been recorded in Australian waters. Some 100 Australian snakes are venomous, although only 12 are likely to inflict a wound that could kill you.

The most dangerous snakes belong to the front-fanged group, which in NSW include the tiger snake, brown snake, death adder, mulga or king brown snake and a few species of sea snake(.I personally think that the Taipan also belongs to this group).

Australia's other snakes are the solid-toothed non-venomous snakes (such as pythons, blind snakes and file snakes) and venomous rear-fanged snakes (such as the brown tree snake and mangrove snakes). All native snakes in NSW are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.

However the Taipan is the most venomous snake, not even in Australia, but of the world.

Ah, they are evil looking critters -- great in photos as long as I don't have to meet them face to fang!! Hope you have a wonderful week, Wil!!

Here in our semi desert valley we have rattlesnakes, which can make you extremely ill but are seldom (if ever) fatal. They are also protected, but I must admit that when I was quite young and my first child was just a toddler I did batter a rattlesnake that was poised to strike at him, and in the process ruined my husband's rubber spray pants!!!! I am not fond of snakes.....

We have no snakes in Hawaii except at the zoo and I think they're both males. I hope it stays that way.

That's interesting, they are beautiful ! I belong to the women who are not afraid of snakes but run away from a tiny spider !

Ondanks dat ik erg gek van dieren ben en in dierentuinen ook wel slangen fotografeer heb ik er eigenlijk helemaal niets mee.... dat kruipend spul bezorgt mij altijd de kriebels ;-)

Oh dear Wil,
I had to flick through this as I am terrified of snakes.
When I was a youngster a horrid boy called Frankie shoved
a grass snake down the back of my best cotton summer dress,
apparently the screams could be heard for miles all around.
My Mother dashed out and threatened to strangle him and his snake
for frightening me!
He was a horrid boy and caused trouble wherever he went.
We were forbidden to go near him after that !
So it's a Noooo from me!

best wishes,
Di,
abcw team.

Snakes really send chills up and down my spine.
They are amazing creatures but just not my cup of tea...

Although I think some snakes can be quite beautiful, I'm not very fond of them. However, I did enjoy learning about the wide variety that you have in Australia. Blessings!

I am afraid of snakes and I don't see the beauty in them, although I was born in the year of the snake I think.

Je ne savais pas que le le Taïpan du desert est le plus dangereux serpent au monde. Mais j’aime bien le serpent vert arboricole – il est vraiment beau.

I'm not afraid of snakes as long as I see them first ;>). These are all handsome examples of their kind.

That lime green tree snake is so beautiful. Won't mind a pair of boots from it. My nephew in Brisbane had a python visit his garage. Likely it is not venomous.

Nice looking snakes here, I never even ever heard of a Black Hooded Python before, interesting how his head is all black, I know we have a lot of different snakes here in USA, tho not sure what they are all, my all time favorite snake has always been the Sand Boa isn't native to USA and then of course my other favorite is the California King snake which is often confused with the most posionous snake known as the Coral Snake which is rare in southern CA, most often people kill the King Snake fearing it is the bad guy.
