Our World Tuesday, The Celebration of the Spirit

Ontmoetingskerk

The Celebration of the Spirit, and the Fire  never to be extinguished.

That is the device of a group of ten Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches. From last Thursday, which was  Ascension day, till Whitsuntide on 8th and 9th June we will celebrate the fact that our religion was born on Whitsunday almost 2000 years ago. We keep our churches open from 10 am till 16 pm to receive visitors, offer them coffee or tea with a piece of cake. One of the members of the church has made an excellent slide show of the history of this building and its interior.

We try to combine this celebration with an exhibition of religious art from our local sculptor, Leo Jongenotter, who creates sculptures of steel. His sculptures are linked to religious conceptions and ideas. Art and religion have been connected from the very beginning. Art is a means of communication. Long ago, when most people couldn't read, the biblical stories were depicted  in paintings, murals, sculptures, music.. any kind of art . Apart from a means of communication, art is also used to honour and worship God and to beautify the places where we worship Him.

In our church we are happy to show a couple of interesting and beautiful pieces of art by Leo Jongenotter.

 Dish of Wisdom

A dish is used for collecting things, which you must divide among other people.

Other statues :

A house not fit for habitation

A tribute to the sculptor's father, who had a deep-rooted trust . He never complained. He died after a long sick-bed. The stones in the spine were found on the beach of Normandy. At the bottom the stones are big and strong. The higher they get, the smaller and more fragile they become. At the top a new life begins after he passed away.

Conception resulting in new life in the shape of a crystal sphere, inspiration, breath of the spirit.

These beautiful windows show

the means  of subsistence in Israel mentioned in the bible:

Grapes

Grain

Fish

Looks all very modern ! We have no protestant churches in Belgium, at least I have never seen one. Belgium is catholic through and through and if you say that you are protestant it's like being a Jehova witness, lol !

So even now when people are literate it helps to have art in church!
The one of tribute to Leo's father especially speaks to me.
