Kingsday not on Sunday.
Today we celebrate Koningsdag( kingsday) for the first time. Last year Queen Beatrix abdicated in favour of her son Willem Alexander. His birthday is on 27 April, so we should celebrate on the 27th. This year, however, we can't do that because it is on a Sunday . Celebrating this day together, united as a nation is important for all. The weather helped to strengthen this feeling of togetherness and fraternization.

Kingsday is a public holiday, which will be celebrated enthusiastically throughout the Netherlands. I took some photos of the celebrations in one of the two towns to be visited by the royal couple and their relatives, including our former queen, (now Princess Beatrix), which I saw on TV.
The royalties made a tour by boat through the canals of the Rijp ( in the province of North -Holland.)

A pity that I didn't know that, my son and DIL are not royalists so they probably didn't think of inviting me with my romantic soul ! Last week Maxima was in Brussels shopping and on the way back she ran out of petrol and had to stop on the highway ! Her body guards got her some petrol !
Happy Koningsdag, Wil!
I wonder if the celebrations will be any different from when it was the Queen's birthday.
Looks like a great celebration for the new king and queen! Wonderful captures for the day, Wil! Hope you're enjoying a beautiful weekend!!
I love to see their hats. Looks like a happy celebration on a beautiful spring day.
Your blog is always a learning experience, and I come away knowing something new. That's a good thing.
They are such a handsome royal couple.
They seem to be very well liked, that is important.. A lovely royal couple! A fun celebration for the country.. Thanks for sharing, have a happy week!
Thank you for catching some festivities on the first Kings Day for us, Wil! Wondered how it was for Willem Alexander for him to be the reason for this day, afer it has been in his life time always been his Mother's Day! Can imagine that for Beatrix it would be a feeling of relief of responsibility...
