There has always been fire, but when was it used with a purpose?
From Wikipedia :
Discovery of Fire
The controlled use of fire was an invention of the Early Stone Age. The earliest evidence for controlled use of fire is at the Lower Paleolithic site of Gesher Benot Ya'aqov in Israel, where charred wood and seeds were recovered from a site dated 790,000 years ago.In a paper published in Nature in March 2011, Roebroeks and Villa report their examinations of the available data for European sites and conclude that habitual use of fire wasn't part of the human (meaning early modern and Neanderthal both) suite of behaviors until ca. 300,000 to 400,000 years ago. They argue that the earlier sites are representative of opportunistic use of natural fires.
Natural fires are caused by volcanic eruptions or by lightning. Lateron people discovered a way to make fire themselves. This was very important. They could change their diet from raw food into cooked food. They could now live in better conditions and build fireplaces and hearths.
A hearth is a deliberately constructed fireplace. The earliest fireplaces were made by collecting stones to contain the fire, or simply reusing the same location again and again and allowing the ash to act as hearth construct.
Those are found in the Middle Paleolithic period (ca 200,000-40,000 years ago, in caves in South Africa and in Israel. Later fire was used to produce pottery and clay objects. This all happened already in 40,000-20,000 BC.
It was great to have lunch near this fireplace in a cosy corner of this restaurant in Holten, Netherlands.
My baby granddaughter was fast asleep in front of the fireplace. She was very cold after the ride at the back of the bicycle.
It was foggy when we arrived, and cold! |

Fire GOOD!

Both are good - fire outside, and nice and cosy inside too.
I always learn something from your wonderful posts. Obviously you are still enjoying summer/fall (?) in Australia. Hooray for that.
There is something very mysterious and beautiful to me about fog. Fire is also beautiful in its own way when controlled. Great post.
Wonderful post, a campfire is always fun.. And I love the warmth from a fireplace, it is nice and cozy. Have a happy week ahead!
Great post ~ fascinating and lovely photos ~ thanks,

Fun fire and fun post.
Very few things can beat a real fire - rain in a time of drought being one of the few contenders!

I can't remember the last time we had a fire in the fireplace! It's in the front room and we tend to spend our time in the family room off the kitchen. But we really should spend an evening in the front room sometime soon - before summer arrives!

There really is nothing as inviting as a warm fire during winter. Loved the pictures.
There is nothing like a cozy fire on a foggy, damp day.
I really like the look of that homey restaurant. It makes me want to dine there.
I love the coziness of the cafe, nothing like a warm fire to thaw one's feet and hands. The exterior is quite lovely.
I love cooking out over a fire or sitting by a fire pit when it's cool outside. And nothing beats curling up in front of a cozy fireplace in cold weather. Fog, on the other hand always gives me the impression of something cold, mysterious and hidden.
Wonderful pictures and such a lot of interesting information about the discovery by human of the comforts of fire.
Great to see how well the Netherlands is doing in the Olympics, Wil.
I like that...Fire and Fog. We have many foggy days in the fall and winter here in the Seattle area.
Fabulous fotos for F and inFormation .
What an interesting topic!
We've had fireplaces at all of our last 4 (?) houses.
I love ours on a cold winter's night.

what a great post, and i love foggy photos!
That was a nice restaurant, but foggy outside! When there's a fireplace it's easy to fall asleep when you came out of the cold. Hope for you the weather will soon get warmer, Wil.
Interesting title for the letter "F"..
Nice photos!!
Oh, it's my favorite element! Such a beautiful contrast in the snow. And what a lovely place you've been!
I stay in the hot region so never seen a fire-place.
