Wikipedia:

"The Volkswagen Beetle, officially called the Volkswagen Type 1 (or informally the Volkswagen Bug), is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. The car was conceived by Adolf Hitler when he was leader of Nazi Germany and wanted a cheap, simple car; he contracted Porsche in 1934 to design and build it to his exacting standards. Ferdinand Porsche and his team took until 1938 to finalise the design. The Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform, worldwide."

When we went to Scandinavia in 1976 we drove through Germany. My four years old son was very excited because of all the Volkswagens he saw. He continually shouted:"Mum, dad, there's again a Beetle !"He was angry that we didn't look surprised that there were so many Volkswagens on the road.

In 2005 my daughter, her children and I were in New Zealand, where my then three years old grandson was very much interested in VW Beetles, because of the Herbie movies. He called them Herbie cars. There happened to be several of them in NZ at that time .

So the Beetle played a significant role in our lives.

With thanks to Denise Nesbitt, who created ABC.For more interesting ABC posts click on the logo in the sidebar . This week we are looking for words beginning with V.

We had a VW Beetle for years and I loved it!! It was just about the only car I've ever said that about and I'm just not a "car" person, but I did love that one! Fun post for the day, Wil!! Have a great week!

I used so to envy people who had a 'bug' (as we called them here)....in those days, we drove cheap used cars, all we could afford.

I'm LOUSY at identifying cars, which is why I loved the era of the VW bug.

Our first car after we were married was a red VW with a rooftop, and we drove our "FUFU" 'til it nearly died. I still miss it and would like to own one of those old ones again! They are still VISUAL delights to me. Kate, ABC Team

Lorne had a bright yellow one years ago and called it "Daisy" - I'd love an apple red VW convertible with black leather interior! Wouldn't Tegan look gorgeous riding in the back? lol

Didn't ever have a beetle, but they looked like such fun, - too big a family to stuff all the children into one!!!

After my very first car when I was 23, a Fiat 600, I bought a VW and was very happy with it ! I don't like the new once, they are expensive and not "Volk" at all !

I remember playing "punch buggy" with my brother in the back of our parents car. Sometimes going a little overboard on the "punch" part ending up with a bruise on our shoulders from hitting each other each time we saw a "buggy".

That first white Beetle looks exactly like ours before we loaned it to someone who returned it with a dent in the front. We loved that car even when the heater stopped working.
