Cruise ship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All my life I have been interested in ships. May be it's because my father was a sailor,  who sailed all over the world especially in WWII. When my father came back home we always went to welcome him on his ship. He then showed us around. I once saw the engine-room, but was too young to be interested in engines. I liked his cabin and bathroom with a bath that contained salt water. When he left after a week or so we didn't go with him, because he took a cab to the harbour.
One of the things I'd like to do, is to make a voyage along the Norwegian coast. I shall have to go by cruise ship. A cruise ship is very different from an ocean liner, the latter is of a higher standard and built to protect passengers and crew against rough weather. But an ocean liner can be converted into a cruise liner with all kind of facilities and offering the same amenities as on the cruise ships.

Wikipedia says:"
A cruise ship or cruise liner is a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and the ship's amenities are a part of the experience, as well as the different destinations along the way. Transportation is not the prime purpose, as cruise ships operate mostly on routes that return passengers to their originating port, so the ports of call are usually in a specified region of a continent."!

Cruise ships in Tallinn Passenger Port of Tallinn, Estonia -

Some weeks ago a friend and I visited this magnificent ship, which doesn't sail anymore. It officiates now as hotel.

The fifth SS Rotterdam, known as "The Grande Dame", was launched by Queen Juliana in a gala ceremony on 13 September 1958, and completed the following summer. The Rotterdam was the last great Dutch "ship of state", employing the finest artisans from the Netherlands in her construction and fitting out process Her career spanned forty-one years. She sailed from 1959 until her final retirement in September 2000

We had coffee on the Promenade Deck

There were beautiful decorations on the walls of the staircases

We could see a cabin, or room as they call it here

The swimming pool was not very deep, but the children on board loved to play in it.

This ship was built to sail the oceans in all kind of weather. It was more a cruise liner than a cruise ship, like the ones I show you here , the images of which I use by courtesy of Wikipedia.

The cabins have  balconies, which  an ocean liner or cruise liner doesn't have,  that would be too dangerous in rough weather.

So many cruise ships look like top-heavy big boxes to me.
I'm glad I came to Israel in 1968 with a simple ship, through the Mediterranean. It is great to be on board.
Hope you do your Norway cruise, Wil.

Fantastic photos!
So far I had 2 trips on cruise ship, and I love the carefree part of life on it! No cooking, no cleaning, fresh sea air, etc..

Hello Wil. I have never been on a ship that big. I am much too poor to afford that but it's OK, I probably do not have the "sea legs" to sail and would not enjoy the beautiful cruise. It's like a huge city that floats long the water, it is amazing! It would neat just to walk on one to see how big it is. They just seem SO amazing!! A great post. ♥

I have become wary off cruise lines lately. Not to say I wouldn't go!

It´s really exciting with big cruise ships! You really should go with Hurtigruten along the coast of beautiful Norway!!

I do hope you get to take your Norway cruise. I have only been on one and found it wonderful if fattening. The food is marvelous and available almost around the clock.

Cruises are fun, especially if the weather is good. We were lucky to have great weather on our cruises. The cruise ships are so big, they are like little cities with malls, restaurants, theatres, swimming pools, gym, bars and casinos. What more could you want.

I love to go on cruises. I have been on 3 and would dearly love to go again. In fact I just want to go...anywhere....I get "cabin fever" when we stay home and don't go any place for a while.
I do hope you can go cruising the Norwegian fiords someday.

I would love to be on that cruise ship. Thanks for sharing.

You did quite some work for this post! I love the decorations by the stairs:).
When I lived in Zeeland, I often went with a pretty big ferry from Vlissingen to Breskens, because I had a friend living there.
Have forgotten which pics from Holland I am supposed to send you, Wil. Sorry, life has been a roller coaster since we got back to the US.

I've cruised 3 times to Alaska and enjoyed it immensely. But now I'm getting curious about the Scandinavian countries. There was an article in the newspaper on the weekend about a cruise liner doing the Norwegian coast. I must look into that.

Did I already comment? I just discovered the comment page is still open on my computer, so maybe I didn't.
We are thinking about a cruise on the fjords some day, too, especially now that Mara is living in Norway. That would be fun, to be on the same cruise as you, and have Mara come aboard for lunch, perhaps!
My best friend came back to Canada from England on a freighter in the 1960s, and really enjoyed it because it was so restful but these days she couldn't and neither could I, because there are no passenger elevators, and we would have trouble with the stairs.
Beautiful collection of ship photos you have here for ABC, Wil.

Delightful post! Loved seeing the photos of all the ships and hearing about them. Yes, a Cruise ship is a wonderful thing to get to enjoy. There are so many great cruises available out there. Hope all is well with you!

Hurtigruten is definitely the way to go for cruising the Norwegian fjords. We did it and it was probably the best cruise we have taken and we have done quite a few.

I love the swimming pool! The ships look magnificent from a distance. Cabin - room. Glad to learn that too.

We've done two cruises and loved them for a number of reasons but quite different reasons from those of others which is one of the diversities of cruising - consider the aspects you enjoy and ignore (or at least tolerate) the ones you don't.

It certainly is a beautiful ship. My step-son is in the Coast Guard and I was able to tour his ship once. It was not at all what I thought it would be like and in no way as grand as the ship you have shown us!

Excellent!! Went back in years and what you narrated about your father was true of my husband too!! He took a cab on sailing day too :) Life for a sailor hasn't changed much on ocean liners!! I miss those long trips which I had made with my husband who is no more. The first was of course to Rotterdam.

Great post and fun to read. Those ships are huge...and I am not too brave....

These ships look marvelous! I've never been on a cruise, it's on my bucket list of things yet to do. When I do go, I will need a room with a balcony, because the thought of not being able to get out and get fresh air makes me not want to go!

I would love to do a Mediterranean cruise. Your post has tempted me to pursue that dream.

I have never been on a cruise. My husband says he would be bored.
