The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also called the Church of the Resurrection by Eastern Christians, is a church within the walled Old City of Jerusalem.
The site is venerated as Golgotha (the Hill of Calvary), where Jesus was crucified, and is said also to contain the place where Jesus was buried (the sepulchre). The church has been an important Christian pilgrimage destination since at least the 4th century, as the purported site of the resurrection of Jesus. Today it also serves as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, while control of the building is shared between several Christian churches and secular entities in complicated arrangements essentially unchanged for centuries. Today, the church is home to Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. Anglican and Protestant Christians have no permanent presence in the church.

Brings back wonderful memories for me.
A lot more barbed wire and protective things on the top of the building than when I was there in 2001.

Wil, I guess I was seeing all the fencing and edge guard around the top of the building. In looking at it again it definitely isn't the barbed wire I thought it was.
All of that fenced area and canvas cover on top of building wasn't there when we visited.

Sepulchre is a word I rarely read anywhere else other than the Bible. Beautiful images. And Via Dolorosa on your sidebar - wow! I like playing Sandi Patti's Via Dolorosa on the piano.

Regardless of the religion, places of worship carry a sense of awe that your photos convey beautifully.

Beautiful church and I really liked the frescoes. Odd seeing the beauty of the old building with the fencing on the top. Mixed eras.

The word sepulchre reminds me of the latin word that I used to hear in church.

Like that chandelier of the church. These days, people don't spend so much money on building churches.
