Monday Doorways, Our World Tuesday, Rotterdam

Posted by Picasa

This beautiful door gives access to the Schielandhuis, which was built between 1662 and 1665.The citypalace would give accomodation to the polder committee for almost one and a half century. The architect was probably Pieter Post, an authority in the field of Dutch classicism. In one of my posts I mention him as the architect of the Weighhouse in Gouda and also of the townhall in Gouda.
The Schieland House has been used as a museum and gallery for quite some time now.

Fortunately the Schielandhuis was not destroyed during the WWII

Inspired by a post by Eric Tenin of a Parisian doorway, «Louis» began posting on Mondays photos he had taken of doorways in Paris. To participate click on

The door does the grand building justice and the glass in the windows is extremely beautiful! Must cast a great glow inside!

What a gorgeous door and building, Wil! Love the colorful glass work! I never cease to be amazed and awed by the beauty and architecture of your country and Europe in general! So delighted I was able to spend three years in Europe and travel to so many countries -- the very best and I still miss it!! Your captures and the history you include are superb as always! Thank you for sharing it with us! Hope you have a lovely week!

Beautiful architecture ! I also was surprised that it was still standing, I have been once in Rotterdam years ago and it just looked like all these destroyed cities like Frankfurt, high buildings and glass boxes and all old beautiful houses gone ! sad !

I'm amazed that so much of the Netherlands did survive the Second World War.
