that's My World, ABC Wednesday N for Napoleon and the Netherlands
Napoleon Bonaparte ( 15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821) was a military and political leader of France and Emperor of the French as Napoleon I, whose actions shaped European politics in the early 19th century. From 1806, Emperor Napoleon ruled almost the whole of Europe as an “enlightened despot”.
The Dutch Republic had already fallen to French troops in 1795 with the aid of Dutch patriots. Until 1806, the Batavian Republic, as the Netherlands was then known, remained officially independent of France but in reality little took place without the approval of the French. In 1806, Napoleon appointed his brother Louis as King of Holland, and the Netherlands became a kingdom. This laid the foundations for the later monarchy. In 1810 Napoleon deposed his brother and the Netherlands was absorbed into the French Empire. Three years later Napoleon was defeated and banished to Elba; the Netherlands regained its independence and became a monarchy.

Marvelous, interesting post as always, Wil, and perfect for both days! I always learn something when I visit your blog and that's always a plus! Hope you have a wonderful week!
Sylvia
Thanks for the history lesson. I didn't realize there was a connection between Napoleon and the monarchy in the Netherlands.
I sure didn't know this interesting piece of history. Thank you for the enlightenment. I'm glad Holland regained it's independence and could keep its own uniqueness and culture. I used to love to read about Napoleon and Josephine.
Interesting post and I have learned something new today. Thanks to your post. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate your lesson on the history of your world. There were bits of that history that were never told in my history books! Thanks for an extremely interesting post!
Wil, how did the Netherlands finally choose a monarch.
I know Sweden chose general Bernadotte when their royal family died out, but who and why became ing of the Netherlands?
yes, interesting history. I knew very little of it.

Hi Wil - I've been thinking about you, and meaning to e-mail you since we got home but I've been so tired and SO busy!
I didn't think about "N" for Napoleon, but I did think about the Netherlands for "N" and my post will include a picture of you.

The naval war was an interesting one.
Two massive navies standing each other of while raiding and sinking was rife in the atlantic.
Napolean a hero to his own people, a very real threat to the then brittish empire
Ha Wil,
Bedankt voor het toevoegen in je bloglist. Helaas heb ik geen engelse boeken. Ben je naar iets speciaals op zoek?
Groeten,
Pleun

Great read as usual. Learn a lot from your posts.
I just wonder if "N" had a tummy ache. That's what I do when I have one. HaHa.
Interesting. That Napoleon really got around. He even came and tried to conquer Israel.
Oh, excellent history lesson! I wish I could write well on such topics. Well done!
I've written about Napoleon myself in the past. Excellent post.
Enlighted in some ways, perhaps, but not the one to cross. However, he made Norwegian independence from Denmark indirectly possible, though only for a short period before we were forced in to a union with Sweden for 91 years.
I guess Napoleon is a part of the history of most European nations! I didn't know the Netherlands and Batavia were one and the same. Hmmm.
Napoleon was a fascinating personality - certainly deeply flawed but fascinating nonethless.
Thanks for your comment on my "Waiting". As it turns out, he was waiting for dinner. The building has a restaurant and soon after I snapped the picture, the waitress appeared and lead the man and a woman away.
Really interesting post. It's funny how the pieces of the globe may change a bit, but the people rarely do. I love your "enlightened despot" ha, ha.
Interesting post! I hadn't thought about Napoleon in some time. You've shown some fine facts. Thanks!
Very NICE and Nteresting.
Please come and see what my N is at Nostalgic marveling, thanks!
I see that bicycle in your header photo. My Dad went to Holland for a summer holiday, and told us kids there are a lot of bicycles there.
Napoleon, must be someone that even kids from Borneo were taught.
A little bird told me you played host to a guest from faraway in Canada.
You got to meet Reader Wil!!!!!! I wanna too. She is such a lovely lady and always encourages.
Did you bring over a bottle of Canadian Maple syrup to her?
Did you eat much edam cheese?
I want to post this comment on her site though I just commented on hers.
Sometimes my brain pops into random association mode...and your posting made me think of the pastry called, Napoleon!
I always wonder how one person can make so many people do all the things they do. And, Napoleon took his men into really insane missions!
Thank you for the interesting history, Wil, and for the elegant picture of Napoleon.
Interesting history. Great take on 'N'.
Hi Meryl! Thanks for your comment. I am sorry that I don't get access to your blog. I hope this message will reach you!
Holland is so different from France, but have such a close tie in the history!
I've never really thought of Napoleon as an "enlightened despot" but my nationality may make me biased!
Always have been intrigued with Napoleon. We called one of our kids, when she was between 2 and 5 "little Napoleon! You can guess why:)
By the way, you know me from my "Mysteries" blog as Jeannette St.G., but I started this new one as Emille. (don't know yet which blog to drop yet). Een prettig weekend toegewenst!
after struggling with Napoleon, Belgium still had to fight the Dutch ! and only became independent in 1830 ! In fact, we are still struggling today but that is another story !
