Top photo: Ferry to Texel, an island in the north of Holland on a winter's day.Taken by my Dutch daughter
Second photo: The same ferry to Texel on a summer's day.
Third photo : Ferry to Rotterdam.
Fourth photo: Ferry across the river Lek to Kinderdijk, where the windmills are.

The ferry to Kinderdijk was always popular with my children. We used to walk to the wind mills when the children were little. I even went there when the youngest was lying in the pram and his sisters were five and two. They were always excited to be on that ferry. It takes a few minutes to cross the river Lek. When I have visitors I always walk with them to Kinderdijk.

In a country with so much water like ours, we need ferries and bridges. Somehow I prefer ferries, because there is so much to see on the river.
Our Dutch ferries are but small in comparison to those we need to travel to Great Britain or Scandinavia. Besides the Dutch ferries need only a short time to cross a river and not more than half an hour to travel to one of the islands.

A great post for the days as always, Wil! Ferries are a big part of our world here in Washington as well and some of ours are really huge. They're always fun to take to the different islands off our coast and I always enjoy the trip! Hope your week is off to a great start! Enjoy!

We have a few ferries in the eastern part of our state and I always enjoy riding them -- a little whiff of the romance of the sea, somehow!

Your ferry line scenery reminds me of taking a half-hour ferry trip from mainland Ohio to an island in Lake Erie. The style and color of your boats (yellow) and buildings (charming European architecture) are different of course. And here's the biggest difference: Your ferry lines still run in the wintertime! Lake Erie freezes over so that the only way to Kelleys Island in winter is by private plane or, for the brave or foolish, by four-wheel drive truck over the ice! Both ways are dangerous and can cost your life. Thanks for the pretty views of your ferry and the surrounding land and waterscapes.

Wow - what a rough sea in that first shot. Lovely photos.

Great post on ferries, Wil! I think I might get seasick on days the sea is rough.

Beautiful and interesting; the sea looks stormy and wild. Better keep the sailboats on the shore.

What a difference from winter to summer, Wil.
Ferries are also a big part of life in British Columbia, where I grew up. I know there used to be some river ferries here in Alberta, but I don't know if they are running any more.
We will be visiting Kinderdijk on March 21, and Rotterdam on March 24, on our rivers and canals cruise with Viking River Cruises. My e-mail address is on top of my blog if you'd like to give me yours, then we can get in touch.

These ferries look like a nice way to travel. I don't see too many of them where I am, though they run from Connecticut to Long Island. Yours is a beautiful place.

Your country is so beautiful, Wil. I love visiting your blog because it brings back such lovely memories.

Hi Wil :)
Great post. We have ferries too. After all, Salamina is an island and we need ferries to contact with others in Piraeus and Athens.
I prefer ferries, too.

Wonderful photos, Wil, and an interesting post. I might have to think twice about taking the winter ferry; the waves are, to me, quite intimidating.

I think I have been to Texel once, but I was very young.
Here in Hamburg, I take the ferry to Finkenwerder if I want to spend some time on the water. It's a nice trip of 30 minutes either way and you get to see part of the harbour.

I think that it has been over ten years since I have been on a ferry. Nice post!

I have ridden on several ferries and always enjoyed the adventure. Your first photo looks really cold and ominous. Really nice picture though. Perfect choice for the letter F.

I, too, love ferries. The photos are wonderful - the summer scene is preferable to me!

Oh gosh! I don't think I'd like taking that ferry in the winter! That water looks quite turbulent. And I get seasick easily. But in the summer, it would be lovely! Hope you're having a fabulous week,

I have only ridden a ferry once in my life, from North Island of NZ to South Island. I was happy I did not throw up, being prone to nausea.
Very good choice for F!

The sailboats are waiting for winter to pass to sail again.

Whenever possible, I prefer to take a ferry instead of a bridge too.

A long time since I have been on a ferry, - we frequent the ones going from the mainland of British Columbia to Vancouver Island, and the smaller ferries going to the various islands in Puget Sound, and I remember our trips on them fondly. Great choice for F.

That, my friend, is a mighty BIG ferry! Not sure if I would feel comfortable riding it, but then again, in Hawaii, I m used to riding on small planes.

I love maps almost as much as I love ferries.
