that's My World, ABC Wednesday, R for Remembrance Day

Posted by Picasa

Lest we forget..

On the eleventh of the eleventh at 11 o'clock a.m, 1918 the peace treaty with Germany was signed. This day will be observed on the Sunday closest to the eleventh of November to commemorate the end of WW I.

In Flanders Fields( Flanders is in Belgium)
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Wars are just so sad and so is this poem . . .

Des mots magnifiquement choisis pour symboliser le deuil , le souvenir et l'espoir.
De belles photos pour l'illustrer .

Wonderful how poppies are the symbol world wide for rememberance.
The poem says it all.
Our Veterans day was originally Armistice day also.

Thanks for a wonderful Remembrance Day post. We must never forget, and the poem does a wonderful job of reminding us of that fact.

Such a beautiful post, Wil! Such lovely, sad words and may we never have to know the horror and sadness of war again in any of our countries. Wishing you a beautiful week!

Thanks for sharing this important poem. Those of us on the sidelines of war can barely grasp its significance but must always remember.

touching post, a sad and perfect poem.

That's wonderful, Wil, although I must admit I couldn't read the whole poem. I memorized it when I was young and could probably recite it even now, but I start to cry. My father was a World War II vet, and it is almost a year since he died, so I cry easily right now.
But this is a wonderful post, and I thank you for it. It is something we all need to remember.

I'm with you - all the way.

It is only a pity that we haven't learned our lesson...

Beautiful and very timely Reader. The act of remembrance is so vital to those veterans of World War 2 who remain, - all those they left behind when they came home wanted only to be remembered and November 11th has been such an important day to all our family as we remember Charles' two brothers who he left buried in France and Holland.

Wil - Pls repost on the ABC Wednesday Linky; it had to be rebooted. Thx, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Beautiful poem. I have read it before, but it is worth reading again and again. This is so important. War is insane.

Thank you for this excellent post, 'R for Remembrance Day'.

Best wishes,

I thought more people would do something about Remembrance Day, but your post is the first I've come upon. I have read a lot about how the Dutch helped so many Jews during WW2 - I remember the story of Corrie ten Boom and her courage.

The pictures of your poppies are lovely, such a beautiful red-orange.

Wow. Very profound and yes, we DO need to remember not only on that day, but each and everyday. The ramifications are far too costly should we forget.

Sad that it seems warring will never end. :-(

The poppies are so pretty.

A most worthy post.

With each passing year Remembrance observances take on greater solemnity and regret. Poppies - such beautiful flowers to bloom on fields of carnage. They are short-lived too, like so many thousands of the soldiers who died.

Timely R post. A powerful and beautiful reminder!

WWI has very little meaning when we were young. I was not until when we were at England when we met the Remembrance Day and our friends explain to us the meaning of the poppies. It was such a sad history of modern Europe. Every little village we visited we can see the long name list of people die during the WWI then added list of WWII. Hope the history will not repeat itself again.
