that's My World, ABC Wednesday P for , Paix, Pax, Peace,

Posted by Picasa

In August '87, we were having a holiday in Cornwall and staying with a friend, who was like us a member of a peace movement. The local peace movement asked us to join the Nagasaki Day vigil. I had just returned from the World Congress of Women for Peace in Moscow, therefore I was asked to tell about this conference at the house of one of the members of the Penzance peace group in the evening. The photos are very old and not good, but they give an impression of the day.

The Thousand Origami Cranes has become a symbol of world peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who tried to stave off her death from leukemia as a result of radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II by making one thousand origami cranes, having folded only 644 before her death, and that her friends completed and buried them all with her. (This is only one version of the story. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum states that she did, in fact, complete the 1,000 cranes.)

Wonderful post, Wil. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the world were at peace? It scares me how much harm just a few hateful people can cause.

Oh, I remember peace rallies in England. Love the old pics.

It's not the quality of the old photos that matters, Wil, it's the quality of the work you did. Peace is the most important cause in the world. Bless you.
(And I knew that was you in the second picture even before I saw you had identified yourself.)

Paper cranes...I bet you sold a lot of them too. I admire people who can take a sheet of paper and turn it into all sorts of beautiful things, including cranes.

I like your images from the past, a good reminder of the peace movement. We don't see so many demos these days so maybe the Internet is the way to campaign for such a good cause.

Thank you very much for this beautiful post. You're absolutely right. We did see the display at the Hiroshima museum that Sadako had completed the 1,000 cranes. I'm hoping everybody will work for peace and understanding as you do! You are such a kind and beautiful person, Wil.

Thanks for a very interesting post. Wouldn't it be wonderful if peace were to break out all over the world?

Vrede, iedereen is er voorstander van en toch is het bijna onmogelijk te bereiken.

Will, I am impressed with your work for peace. You are an amazing woman indeed.

What a sad but beautiful story about Sadako Sasaki.
We need more demonstrations for peace. It is sad that something so simple as peace is so difficult to obtain.
Too bad it is not up to the peoples of the world and not the leaders.

and P is for Paulie. . . Ü How interesting that you participate in such a great cause. . . I love the story of the thousand cranes. . . wouldn't it be wonderful if the whole world could be friends such as they were?

A wonderful inspiring post for Peace - something we all strive for in our different ways - ABC Wednesday brings us all together and for a few hours we can put away the troubles of the day and connect with kindred spirits.
Thank You so much for this.

Peace - the most important thing in the world and we constantly strive for its success. Unfortunately, people world-wide mouth the words but don't walk the walk - I appreciate all your efforts.

Wil, I agree with Kay Davies about the quality of the work you did. Today is election day in the U.S. and, as always, an important day to remember the cause of peace worldwide.

I actually read that story, and she did I hear, die after making 600 some cranes. 1000 cranes and one can make a wish. I felt so bad for her too.

Wonderful post! I visited Hiroshima many years ago -- the monument with the paper cranes was the most moving -- a reminder of all the innocents who suffer in war.

that is wonderful! I love seeing those pictures of you and the cranes.

This was intersting to read/learn. I did not know about the origami cranes...:)

I am late here, but I am glad I dropped by. I just came from another blog that presented the Senbazuru, or 1000 Cranes. It's a beautiful symbol of peace, and your efforts in the peace movement are laudable. A wonderful letter P post.
