The Netherlands, that's My World,

From Wikipedia:

In the Netherlands
the Commemoration of the Dead is held annually on May 4th . It commemorates all people in the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since World War II.
Traditionally, the main ceremonies are observed in Amsterdam at the national monument on Dam Square, and attended by members of the cabinet and the royal family, military leaders, representatives of the resistance movement and other social groups. At 8:00 p.m., two minutes of silence are observed throughout the Netherlands. Public transport is stopped, as well as all other traffic. Radio and TV only broadcast the ceremonies from 19.00 until 20.30. Since May 4, 1994, the flags, flying at half-mast during the day, are then hoisted to the mast-head when the Dutch national anthem is being played.
We were liberated by the Canadians. The Dutch are very grateful for that. Many of them died for our freedom.

Tomorrow we celebrate Liberation Day and for me it's a double reason for celebration, as my daughter and her family will arrive early in the morning at 8:55 at Schiphol Amsterdam!! We will all be there to welcome them.

So it is similar to Anzac day.

Have a good reunion with your daughter. I hope the tulips are still around for her and kids to enjoy.

I did not realise that Holland was liberated by the Canadians. For some reason I had always imagined it was the British. I must talk to my mother about this more, before it is too late.

Happy Liberation day and enjoy your family, Reader Wil.

Lovely shots. I love the photo of the grandbaby! My daughter is expecting baby #2 next week!
Canada has always held great fondness for Holland. Our tulip Festival in Ottawa begins in another week. Thing is, with our early Spring, the tulips are nearly done! I'm visiting my daughter when the baby arrives in Ottawa. Hate to leave My Muskoka , but important !

I guess each country recognizes the sacrifices of the soldiers who keep it free. I love how the Netherlands truly shows her appreciation. Very lovely post.

We all need to remember those who gave their all for us.
I did not know that about the Canadians. Very interesting. I'm sure your two countries have a special kinship.

«Louis» appreciates reading about this tribute to those who have fallen for freedom. As Ann wrote, it reminds «Louis» also of ANZAC day.

The Canadians had a tough go of it in rooting the Nazis out of the Netherlands, not only because the Nazis (dangerous enough on the attack) were never so dangerous as when in retreat, but also because of the pig-headedness of the British commander, Montgomery. The Canadian contribution to winning the war is often overlooked.
