QUARTET
This is the German and Dutch equivalent of Happy Families, Go Fish or Authors. Many different designs of cards were made for this game in the late nineteenth and throughout the twentieth century, with various educational or other themes.

1.Quartet is played by three or more players.

2.The cards are shuffled and divided among the players.

3.Examine your cards; if you hold a complete set of four cards, lay these on the table.

4.The player on the right of the dealer asks any player if he holds a card needed to complete a set of four or a quartet.

5.If the player asked holds the card, he must surrender it, if not he becomes the one who asks for cards he needs to collect sets of four cards or quartets.

6. The winner is the player with the most quartets.

We often played Quartet with the children, with whom we used a far simpler set of cards when they were too young to read. My grand children in Australia liked the game as well.

Quartet looks a lot more interesting and educational than Go Fish.
And lucky for you it starts with Q. :)

Oh, yes, I have to agree, Quartet does look a lot more educational and fun than Go Fish. And I also love the pictures on the cards! Great post for both days!!

Have a great week, Wil!

Are games popular in the Netherlands, Reader Wil? Our Dutch friends taught us to play Rumikub when they were over here and then sent us a set on their return. We still play regularly but when they come over they are so good at it that they always beat us.

Very interesting. A game that gives the adults a chance to teach and the children an opportunity to learn while all have fun.

I haven't played Quartet in ages, but I used to have tons of different decks. Cars, animals, Disney, horses, birds - you name it. I have no idea if I still have any, maybe I'll search my parents' attic (who knows what I'll find...tons of old toys up there)

Let's hope card games never get lost in the jungle of "videogames"

Interesting post. I guess I have not heard of a lot of modern games or old ones for that matter.

This sounds like a game I might enjoy playing with your grandkids. I like a game with simple rules.

This looks like a lot of fun. We used to play Go Fish all the time with the kids. These cards look a little like the ones my almost 3 year old granddaughter plays with.

I thought of 4 singers when I read quartet. Thanks for the new vocabulary today.

It seems to be much preferable to poker, but then I'm not a gambling man.

Oh I love this game. We used to play it loads when my children were small.

Probably worth a little now. X

You asked about using tanks with mine flails in Afghanistan: that is indeed done, but only as a part of much more complex mine clearing operations. Some mines are flail-resistant and mine-flail vehicles are vulnerable to anti-tank mines, they can only be used for anti-personnel mines. Also, they don't work so well in dry or muddy terrain or areas with many rocks. Unfortunately, we seem to be a lot better in coming up with weapons than in making them harmless again.

Oh, I loved Happy Families as a child! I particularly loved the illustrations, which aren't nearly so good on modern packs. Having said that, I can't tell if yours are modern or vintage! Whichever it is, they're great!
