that's My World, & ABC Wednesday, K of Krimpen

Two of the villages in the Krimpenerwaard ( the name of the polder) are called Krimpen. The larger of the two is called Krimpen a/d IJssel, it lies on the river IJssel. The smaller one is called Krimpen a/d Lek, because it is situated on the river Lek, which you have to cross to come in Kinderdijk, where the windmills are.The church has a steeple with a wind vane representing a whale, because the church is built near the place where the whalers started their voyage to the north of Europe, centuries ago.
Wikipedia says:"" Krimpen aan de Lek is a town on the Lek River in the municipality Nederlek, province South Holland, the Netherlands. It had 6607 inhabitants in 2008.

The name Krimpen comes from the archaic word "Krempener", meaning "river crossing". Therefore Krimpen aan de Lek means "Crossing on the Lek".

Krimpen aan de Lek is a quiet and scenic village with 3 elementary schools and two Protestant churches. The village is small but as any other village it has a shopping centre with a supermarket, a greengrocer, a butcher, two baker's shops, three hairdresser's, a beauty parlour, a florist, a shoeshop, a clothes shop( very fashionable), a florist, a photoshop with an adjoining postoffice, an optician, a toyshop with an office stationer's, two bicycle repairers, a pet shop and a drugstore. There are several pubs and three restaurants. We have a sportcentre, which is used for all kind of events. On Fridays there is a market.

thanks for your concern. the flood that happened in manila was the worst ever in my years of existencee . the place i live in is about 3 hours away in manila. we had strong winds but fortunate enough not to be flooded. i had lots of friends in manila who lost everything but i am sure we filipinos can survive this.

Wish I could have gone to that part of NL Wil. It's very beautiful there, right? Oh yeah, Wil thanks for the thoughts and concern. Our family is doing well. The flood was on the capital of Phils. and it was very bad. And I am on a smaller city away from those disaster. You are so very kind to think of me. Bedankt en fijne week. Groetjes!

J'ai admiré la belle girouette, le héron, le petit personnage, les habitations paisibles et les jardinets au bord de l'eau .
C'est charmant (mais il doit y avoir beaucoup de moustiques !)

Krimpen must be a nice place to live. It seemed different from the image one sometimes get of The Netherlands as a crowded and busy country. Obviously a place worth a visit.

Wow! I kinda felt tongue tied inside my head as I read this post, but it sure was fascinating to learn about these places and the meaning behind their names.

Fabulous, Wil. I liked the slide show very much. I'm always struck about how tidy the Netherlands tends to be!

Great captures of the ferry and villages, with inspiring narrative. Thanks, Wil.

The villages are so pretty and clean – the water too. I say this because when we returned from Canada we saw that our family room had been flooded, and much of the surrounding area. I posted some pictures of the Atlanta flood on my blog and the pics of the river are not as pretty as those on your pictures.

I do love your slides, and this one is especially interesting and beautiful. The Ferry looks so sunny and bright too.

Thank you for giving us this tour of such a quaint and scenic town. The whale weather vane is certainly unusual, but it's understandable after reading your explanation. I'd like to sit on that little deck and see the "water everywhere." Thanks for sharing!

Lovely photos. A polder, I'm guessing, is like a U.S. county.

It is interesting to know the origin of village names reader wil. Here is the Yorkshire Dales a lot of our village names go back to Viking for their origin.

How interesting to see it. Odd to see a modern row of houses and allotments which could so easily have been from around here, though!

Except it all looks so clean! We always have rubbish blowing about. :(

It is a small village, but with a shopping mall!! When centuries ago, the whalers went out from the port. It must be hard time for those sailers. The churches must provided many comfort for the family members.
