that's My World The Dutch Castle of Middachten

Please click on slide to enlarge.

History

The first mention of Middachten Castle appears in a document dated 1190. The present building dates from the end of the 17th century but incorporates parts of the original early medieval castle. Middachten owes its unique character to the fact that it is still a real estate which includes woods, farms and agricultural land. Within all this lies the park and the beautiful gardens which surround the castle.

Middachten has never been sold but has passed from one generation to the next. The current owner, Isabelle, Countess Ortenburg van Aldenburg Bentinck, is the 24th to inherit the property. As a result of this unbroken line of inheritance the interior of the castle is still ‘complete'. Included in the original inventory is a large collection of portraits and many 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th century pieces of furniture. There are also original cupboards containing antique porselain tea and dinner sets, glass ware, silver and linen.

Prachtige dia's :)
Fijne avond..

What a lovely place! I like that architecture and the setting is very pretty. Reminds me a bit of a castle in France. And the flowers...well, what can one say about flowers in Holland? Simply stunning!

Those records go way back. Makes me think of the Doomesday Book in the UK and all the property and families named in there. It is such a well preserved beauty.

That is really beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us! 24th owner! All those antiques treasured in the castle amazing. Canada is a pretty young country. We see someplace that,s a hundred years old here we say WOW. To see something from the 11 hundreds is unbelievable. That is one off the things that amazed me the most the last time I was there.

Wil, what a beautiful castle and grounds. Amazing that it has been around for centuries. We have mansions in the US, of course, but nothing that can even come close to a real castle! They are everywhere in Europe. Thank you for the tour. Have a wonderful Tuesday.

Hugs,

Renie

It is a beautiful old castle and its nice that it has stayed in the same family over the years. Although the cost of maintaining the castle must be enormous.

I have enjoyed the tour, what a beautiful castle. The cat pictures are so cute. My cat is my first pet(I am pass half-century) and I am so attached. Everyday we learn something new from her. She is more of a quiet cat and sleeps all day. Thanks for your nice comments.
