that's My World, ABC Wednesday U for Utrecht.
The pictures of the first video are not mine, they are taken from Google.
The university of the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands, is is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe. . It was established March 26, 1636,
The university's motto is "Sol Iustitiae Illustra Nos", which means "Sun of Justice, shine upon us"
Utrecht University is firmly founded on tradition. The University, which recently celebrated its 365th anniversary, has developed into one of Europe's largest and most prominent institutes of research and education. With 14 faculties, and 70 degree courses, which are attended by more than 20.000 students, Utrecht University offers a wider range of subjects than any other university in the Netherlands.

Utrecht is the city where I attended the training college for teachers. In April I met a friend, whom I hadn't seen for a long time, at the Central Station of Utrecht and we started to walk to the town centre. From a distance we could see the Dom Tower, which dominates the city. The weather was just fine and we availed ourselves of the opportunaty to have a lunch outside, like many others did. Lateron we walked in the direction of the church, the tower of which is separated from the church.
The Dom Tower (Cathedral Tower, Dutch: Domtoren) of Utrecht is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, at 112.5 metres (368 feet) in height, and the Gothic-style tower is the symbol of the city. The tower was part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin, Utrecht, also known as Dom Church, and was built between 1321 and 1382, to a design by John of Hainaut. The cathedral was never fully completed due to lack of money. Since the unfinished nave collapsed in 1672 the Dom tower became a free standing tower.
The tower stands at the spot where the city of Utrecht originated almost 2,000 years ago.
St. Martin's Cathedral, Utrecht, or Dom Church (Dutch: Domkerk) was the cathedral of the diocese of Utrecht during the Middle Ages. Once the country's largest church and only cathedral, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, it has been a Protestant church since 1580. The building is the one church in the Netherlands that closely resembles the classic Gothic style as developed in France. All other Gothic churches in the Netherlands belong to one of the many regional variants. Unlike most of its French predecessors, the Dom Church has only one tower, the 112 m (368 ft) high Dom Tower, which is the hallmark of the city.
After our walk in Utrecht we went back to Central Station, which is a town in itself, with a shopping centre and restaurants. We both took a train in the opposite direction, promising each other to see each other soon again!

Utrecht sounds a fascinating place, Reader Wil. Our nearest cathedral is in Ripon and there they have a rood screen with statues, one of which is of a Saint from Utrecht - sorry but I can't remember his name.
i would so enjoy wandering through the campus of the university...that was nice you were able to meet up with an old acquaintance and lunch and chat.
have a lovely tuesday.
I do love the slide show. The movement gave the impression of being there.
The university motto is wonderful.
Such a beautiful city and wonderful church. Thank you so much for the tour.
Fantastic information. I didn't know that the Utrecht university is so old.
I love Utrecht specially to walk along the canals and drink coffee
and I have shopped a lot in Hoog catherijne
That is an enormous university and they off so much to their students. This is a marvelous post, Wil.
The photographs are lovely. I can always count on that. Thanks for sharing.
Prachtig stad en met al die informatie erbij wordt het nog beter.

Beuatiful pics of the Domkerk, Wil! I didn't realize that Utrecht's university had so many students. Before we went to live in L.A. I went for a year to the Free University in Amsterdam, but I wanted more specific psychology courses than they offered.
Very interesting about the University of Utrecht. And that's a fancy slideshow you have now - lovely photos.
It must have been wonderful to be educated at such a historic university in such a lovely town. Thank you for the tour. I work at the University of South Africa but the buildings are new and modern. Certainly they lack the charm of Utrecht.
What a marvelous post, Wil! I would love to be able to visit there. And how fun to get to have lunch with an old friend -- always fun. Enjoyed reading some of the history of Utrecht. Have a great week!
Le centre historique est magnifique, et la partie moderne semble active et agréable .
Merci de nous faire visiter cette belle ville .
Utrecht n'est -elle pas aussi célèbre pour sa dentelle ?
What amazing architecture in those buildings. It looks like a wonderful place to visit. Thanks for sharing these. :-)
Love it! I wood love to see it myself one day. Have a fun abc:)
A very historical place that I always associate with the Treaty so this was great for me to put the place into perspective. Beautiful architecture.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful city with us. How wonderful that the old University is still flourishing and moving forward.
What a magnificent old University, Wil. And how wonderful that is still going strong.
Beautiful pictures, and most interesting information on its history. What a treat it would be to visit it. I still remember many of the ancient and magnificent historic buildings that I saw as a child in Europe.
Happy Wednesday!
Hugs,
Renie

Great videos and pictures. It looks that you live in a wonderful town.
Never been to Etrecht, but I can see that I have missed something really nice. I just have to go back again to the beautiful Netherlands. Thank you for a wonderful or UUUnderbar guided tour.
Greetings from Tyra in THE GREENHOUSE
Beautiful building, that university! And the Dom tower sounds intriguing. How lovely to have it standing on the spot where Utrecht originated! There must be a real sense of history just there.
What a lovely presentation of Utrecht, with lovely photos, history and general information.
Great post.
I love these old, historic cities. My own home city is York - I really feel at home in such wonderful places.
Very nice architecture in Utrecht. Beautiful place.
And did you see each other soon again? I'm all caught up in your teling of you day now:)
Beautiful images, Reader Wil! You are definitely making me want to visit The Netherlands. I live near our local state university, which I also attended. They are always in a building stage, and the campus is continually changing. But I much prefer the older dignified buildings--so much more tradition to them.
WOOW !!! What a beautiful area to live in ...
Sounds like you had a lovely time with your old friend..
The town looked as full of cultural heritage as the old Dutch towns are known to be. I have a feeling I would enjoy this one more that Amsterdam. Thank you for sharing!

Have a great week ahead!
To answer your question about the squaw being thrown in. I don't think she had any choice. In those days just ordinary women had no rights and were almost like property. She would have been more like property than most women.
My mother said the man who got her used her like his wife and that he would wander down the mountain and hang around outside their log cabin but never come in. So the lady became part of our family on my mom's side but she never said much about her. I have a letter here that explains it all but Patty got tired of looking and I never started. It took me a while to find the right letter the last time. I saved all the letter mom ever wrote to me and am glad I did.
great wil,
to see my old hometown again, I lived here (in Utrecht I mean) for 12 years, great city and always having good memories.
Come see my blog, and my animals.
